Try air bnb for your best chance of a good deal. Hostel bookers is another place to look but make sure you read the reviews.

If you're not too fussed about staying in Manhattan, then Brooklyn or Long Island aren't too far away using the subway. Much more reasonable when compared to Manhattan accommodation prices.

Good advice here. You might be lucky with Downtown Brooklyn. Great subway lines and 15 mins door to door to midtown Manhattan

Airbnb is illegal in NYC. all apartment rentals under 30 days are illegal.

Jaywalking is also illegal, yet people do it every day in front of cops. Literally tens of thousands of people rent apartments on airbnb in nyc every month. My gf rents hers out to visitors on occassion. The laws against renting aren't enforced and if they ever were the only people that would be held responsible would be the apartments owners.

Airbnb is the way to go for accomodation in the city. Hotels here are overpriced box rooms and most of them are in midtown which is the worst part of the city to stay in in my opinion.

In a great location in midtown. Used it twice this year and no problems at all.

Since when? There are posters for Airbnb all over the subway and a lot of public buildings. Its not illigal to rent a room out in your home on a nightly, weekly or monthly basis.

It's illegal for entire apartments to be listed. A LOT of tenants also don't realize renting out individual rooms is against their tenancy agreement, and can be evicted if they are found by their landlords to be renting rooms out.

Just to be clear about this from the perspective of a person who has actually lived in New York for the past 20 years - there have been basically zero prosecutions of anybody for renting out their apartment on airbnb or for subletting in general. Subletting of apartments has been going on here for decades, landlords don't love the idea but there is basically zero risk from the tenant's point of view by renting on airbnb. Again, thousands of people do it in this city every day.
