If you can access the bike to work scheme, you can double your budget and get something decent enough. If you're carrying a child seat, you should probably consider something with wider (street) tyres. You should avoid suspension as this adds weight and saps power.

How far is your commute? City or country roads?

Thanks for reply. Drumcondra to mulhuddurt seems far to unfit me but easy if fit? Cant get bike to work scheme so would have to be cash prolly could stretch to 400. Thanks didnt think of wider road tyres for added safety. Would it be more a mountain bike id be looking for then. Seen on another thread Giant and Trek recommended brands....

it'd be about 15km if you headed through phibsborough, through the phoenix park and out through castleknock. doable in less than an hour easily.

I wouldn't recommend a mountain bike. Something like the Giant Escape(?) or something from the Trek FX series. Both are flat-bar hybrids with room for wider tyres. Something like a Schwalbe Marathon tyre would have reasonable puncture protection. Wider tyres are not about safety, rather they're about a more comfortable (if a little slower) ride.

the giant escape isn't available for the OP's budget, buying new - but you may be able to pick something up S/H i suspect.
