Looking to purchase my first car. Needs to be no bigger then a 1.2L, as only 23 and insurance would be a killer for anything bigger i'd assume. Budget is set at 3k.

Have been looking mainly at VW Polo's, and maybe the odd Seat Ibiza (similar engine more or less isn't it?). Any suggestions welcome, if anyone has had any experience with similar cars! Thanks!

Your best bet - either Toyota Yaris or Nissan Micra.

Well I would have loved something like a suzuki jimny for my first car. I haven't a clue what they are like as a daily driver. There's the suzuki swift also to consider or a 1.25 fiesta (2000 ish model).
Lovely little jeep and drives well. 2 new tyres, new clutch and pressure plate. NCT 'til 15/07/2015. Genuine reason for sale. €2, 650 ono.

Vw Polo, Toyota Yaris, Ford Fiesta, would stay away from Opel Corsa in that price range, just from talkin to people who've had troublesome ones.

Toyota corolla would be a good bet. Bought a 2000 one myself for a lot less than 3k and it hasn't missed a beat. Anyone else I've known with them all say the same thing. If I was starting out, that's what I would buy.

Cheers for the replies! Going to see a VW 2004 Polo this week. Priced at 2,500 which i'd be happy enough around. Quick question in relation to a mechanic seeing it, does anyone have an idea of how easy it is to get a mechanic to go view a car and give it a once over? Also any clue at what price I'd be looking at to get one?

I thought you wanted a reliable car? Those Polos are far from it especially the 1.2 litre. A Yaris would be a better acquisition.

You can't go wrong with a jap built car such as a Honda jazz Honda civic or Toyota yaris.
