I'm after an eternity ring for my wife, - 18ct white gold and in and around 0.5ct diamond. What designs do the ladies out there go for? While I'm probably over simplifying, the two main design I note are half and full eternity. I guess jewellery preference is a personal thing but I'd be interested to get some feedback on what to look for, what others prefer and where in Dublin would be a good place to start looking.

I know you might want it to be a surprise for your wife but it really would be a personal preference as to the design full or half so I'd ask her or try to get her opinion with out asking her straight out. As for where to start looking in Dublin I'd have no idea as I don't know Dublin jewelers how about your usual jewelers.

I take your point - you buy something and its not right, you ask her opinion and you spoil the surprise! I think the right choice trumps the surprise element on something like this so in hindsight, perhaps an indirect conversation is best.

Why not make a day of it, bring her for a really nice lunch/dinner and then surprise her by bringing her to pick one?

Edited to add, its really worth shopping around and I would recommend not buying from a highstreet jeweller. I can PM two suggestions for alternatives if you like.

Zadkiel got there before me - make a day of it, she'll still be very surprised and she can pick one that she likes!

@Zadkiel would appreciate if you could send me that pm.

I agree with the day out suggestion.

When i got mine i went for the half ring, the very good jewellers that I was buying from pointed out that if I ever wanted to resize it is much easier to do with a half rather than a full. this is something that people dont think about but is a very valid point. so even if you let you wife pick let he know of this so she can consider it when making her decision.

May I ask what is the significance or meaning of the eternity ring? When in the marriage should the wife get one?

If you really wanted to make a day out of it (well it would take two!) but Fallers jewellers in Derry make custom rings so she could have exactly what she wanted and they are really reasonably priced. We had our wedding rings made by them - they can send the rings down when they are finished but we decided to make another day trip up to collect them. Can always stop off at the Outlet in Banbridge on way back.
