Ok, In the last few days, 2 of my friends have been yawning in my face while talking to me. One over the phone and one in person. Also, my dad yawns constantly while taking to me but apparently this is a side effect of anti depressants. I am actually quite an an interesting person and am 'alive' in general. Maybe I just need to find new friends who could be arsed. :o

Anyone else experience this? perhaps people are genuinely tired or not interested in what i have to say.

Yawning is allowing extra oxygen to the brain and allows people to concentrate better on what you're saying / doing me thinks :)

This means, you never shut up talking about yourself doesn't it and you wear people out. You know, you drone on and on and on and on about all this sh*t you're gonna do like photography classes and get into graphic design and you saw this and it was the sh*ts and people yawn because they're wondering are you ever going to stop talking but sure what does it matter cos you're so alive man.

That's one theory; it's not clear why we yawn.

one of the most interesting theories is that it serves no physiological purpose at all. It's just some weird genetic accident.

apparently the only thing it does is slightly cool the brain down. other than that it's a signal to everyone that it's sleepy time. heard this on the science phone in on 5live at 3am on thursday mornings

News talk? Really? Not a hope!

Is anyone else genuinely yawning reading this? Not from tiredness but because talking about yawning encourages it?

Why do other animals yawn then? ;)

i have no idea. i heard it in a physiology lecture years ago.

maybe because it's an accidental outcome of a genetic sequence that also happens to code for something useful?

The first time someone calls you a horse you punch him on the nose.

The second time someone calls you a horse you call him a jerk.

But the third time someone calls you a horse, well then perhaps it's time to go shopping for a saddle. ;)

Interestingly enough the only animal that doesn't yawn is the giant sloth, natures laziest animal.
Now I may have just made that fact up but it doesn't make it any less true (because it's now on the internet).

My mother used to say yawning was contagious. If you were in company and someone yawns its likely you will yawn shortly thereafter. Some believe its to do with air pressure in our ears more say its atmospheric conditions.

Yawning helps to get more oxygen to the brain, contagious yawning happens because when you see someone else yawn, your brain thinks that there must not be enough oxygen in the air and so that makes you yawn too!
