Lord Richard "Dickie" Attenborough started as an stage actor, but gained critical attention for his role as psychopathic killer "Pinkie" Brown in Brighton Rock. Later roles included The Great Escape, but then he moved in to production, most famously directing Gandhi to multiple Oscars including Director and Best Picture, and later Shadowlands. Later he returned to small acting roles, most notably in the Jurassic Park series directed by Steven Spielberg.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Where are you seeing this? I heard it was a hoax. RIP if true though.

BBC TV News at 10PM, so if it's a hoax, they've been taken in too. It's a Sunday evening, give them time.
Edit: BBC website has it now.

Where did this hoax thing come from? Twitter?

Actor and then director, he'll always be "Big X" on a bank holiday weekend, though his best performance may well be as John Christie in 10 Rillington Place.

Shadowlands which about C. S. Lewis and Joy Gresham (Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger are boTh brilliant) is my favourite of his directed films. I have never seen Magic (another one of those films of the 70s that has all but vanished from tv) hopefully they'll show it.

Only saw Brighton Rock and 10 Rillington Place for the first time comparatively recently, but he was brilliant in both. RIP.

Loved his biopic Chaplin, Robert Downey Jr was amazing as Charles Chaplin.

    RIP.

Great shame but he lived to a ripe old age. I thought he was an excellent actor. Comfortable as a sinister, menacing, presence but just as at home as a loveable jovial man.

    RIP

    WELCOME..... TO JURASSIC PARK..

    Amazing.

Also, must have watched this at least 100 times over the years and it never fails to make me laugh

I've never seen Gandhi, must try and check it out this week. Sad news to start a week.

    Ah shame.

He had a great innings though.

Directed and starred in two of my favorite war films, 'A Bridge too Far' and 'Sea of Sand'.
