Hi all, moving into a new house next month and need bedroom furniture plus bed. Was wondering if Ikea deliver? Also, are the flat packs relatively easy to put together? Will be doing it on my own!

A bit of a tip for putting flat packs together..
Use a suitable wood adhesive or clear Tec 7 along where the wood joints are.
It makes the units stronger and more stable when their finished.

    Yes, IKEA deliver (link)

They do deliver but you cant order online so you have to go there to pick/pay for goods first. Then you have to bring your items to a separate area (near checkout) where the delivery companies desk is.

Their flatpacks are easy enough to assemble but two people are needed for the bigger items.

Ikea is great - just be aware that even going there with a specific shopping list in mind does not mean that you will end up getting up buying things that you 'need' even if you never knew you needed them before. Its a fantastic store.

Re furnishing an unfurnished house - have you seen adverts.ie? Its absolutely fantastic for virtually everything... I can't recommend it highly enough. I had never heard of it before last summer when i bought my first house and i've got loads of stuff of it... Just a suggestion :)

The delivery service is a disgrace. In IKEA Dublin shop, we have been told delivery is accommodating and the person we were speaking with put a note on our delivery for the hub/driver to deliver our products between 10am and 1pm on Monday 23 as it would have been hard to be home from 3pm to 5pm. The driver called us at 3:03pm saying that he could be to our place in 30 minutes. We told him it was too late now and the driver told us he could do the delivery tomorrow morning. The day after, I took the day off from work to wait for the delivery and nothing. We then called the customer service to ask them when they were going to deliver. We first spoke to someone who contacted the Hub and told us it wasn't possible and, all of the sudden the phone hangs up! I We called again and continue the conversation with someone else. This time we learnt we were not scheduled for delivery and that we had to re-book, that the delivery was not going to happen today and neither tomorrow! We were not happy with this, but asked to be delivered on next Tuesday because we are away, and we have been told there is a 4 days turn around for deliveries and that it can only be on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays. We have been forced to ask a friend to get the delivery on Sunday for us and now our friend has to wait from 7am to 7pm to wait for the delivery. Even if drivers call an hour before the delivery, which is never true since they typically call 15mins to 30mins before they arrive, it is totally unacceptable to give no proper notice of delivery and force customers to stay home all day, while waiting for the call! There is a zero lack of flexibility and communication, they keep you waiting for as long as possible when trying to solve the issue by phone. So we got our friend to render herself available to Ikea delivery on a Sunday from 7am to 7pm, and now we even have to move everything from our friends place to ours (useless to have it delivery on the first place). The customer service when calling is truly awful

In ordered from Ikea online and the service was absimal, three delivery dates passed and no one showed up, and took 3weeks to get out refund.
I then placed the order through Carrickmines and it came 2 days later, but an hour outside the time slots given.
I wouldn't bother with Ikea online - it comes from the UK so a lot less flexible.

I got great service from them, they called beforehand and helped bring everything in.

Is there any difference between the carrickmines store and the Ballymun one....? I Live slightly closer to the carrickmines store....?

Second question - has anyone ever bought wardrobes from them using their pax online designer set up or am I better paying a visit to their store with my dimsension and goin through what I want with a human rather than a web site

Last query. What Are their delivery charges....I would be approx 90 miles from their carrickmines store and if price is right Intend to order a significant amount of stuff as in wardrobes for 4 bedrooms

Finally apologies for ‘bumping an old thread’

Carrickmines is a collection point rather than a proper store.

Delivery charges are detailed on the website

So is it worth the trip there to discuss wardrobes with someone there or better to go straight to Ballymun store

    Hi,
Personally I'd go straight to the Ballymun store to discuss the wardrobe
We bought one for both our daughters room earlier in the year and fitting is very easy when you use the PAX planner because the print out provides warehouse locations aswell as fitting instructions; it tells you how many holes to count up for fitting shelf etc.
I also recommend purchasing the blank caps they fill any unused holes and cost a few euros,
"VARIERA" 5mm Cover Caps (White) item code: 002.263.15

Heres where I've documented building our wardrobe for the kids room I started this home improvement thread few years back the entire wardrobe including all accessories was €745
Purchased the spirit level and clamps in my local "Mr.price"
I used evostick PVA wood glue on the dowels of the wardrobe aswell as on the desk and other items which helps to keep them very sturdy.

I've never had anything delivered by IKEA though as delivery has always been more expensive than diesel I drove up myself for everything.

Many thanks for advice. Can I ask one more thing, is there a ‘pax person/desk’ that you can go to with your measurements etc. if so do you need to make an appointment....?

In ballymun or "the main ikea store" as we call it
Theres atleast twelve dell computers with chairs and desks in the wardrobe area where you can sit and plan without appointment; theres also dedicated staff to hand if required,
I recommend going mid week for best help as weekends are absolutely jammers
You then drag and drop items using the virtual planner
If it wont fit then the software wont let you fit it in,
As you can see in our wardrobe the bottom drawer has to be a cage type because a wooden drawer would hit the door hinges,
The build software alerted this issue and wouldn't let us put in a wooden drawer.
Another good thing about the software is that it automatically adds up the cost of everything and displays on top right corner of the screen as you add items it increases
Then when you print it provides all stock locations and fitting information for counting up the holes.

Any other questions I'm happy to answer no problem.

You can book an appointment to meet someone in Carrickmines to help with kitchen or bedroom design.

https://www.ikea.com/ie/en/stores/order-collection-points/dublin-carrickmines/ (Scroll down for the links to book an appointment)

    But I'd go to Ballymun.

Yes I designed it online, and had it delivered. They brought it in to the room where it was going with no fuss and it worked out exactly how I intended.

    never needed to do that

two pieces of advice I'd give

a battery powered electric screwdriver with philips and allen key heads

and if building multiple units of the same thing - i.e. two bedside lockers.. do them in tandem - don't build one and then start the other. You'll hate yourself for doing that.

Another query......can you get slightly wider wardrobe units than those shown on web site.....? I have a bed room that has an ‘indendation’ For a built in wardrobe that is 2.1m wide, from what I can see from web site the pax units increase in width by 0.5m increments.....so am I stuck with a 2.0m with a gap of 5cm each side or do I have to get a 2.5m wide one and trim it to size.....?

  • Administrators Posts: 54,423 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

I think you'll be stuck with the 2m one.

Not sure you'd be able to trim the bigger one down, since you'd then have issues with the size of everything inside it, and the doors. Not to mention you'd probably be cutting off the holes etc for the fixings.

I would either leave a 10cm gap on one side, as that's more useful than 2 x 5cm gaps, or I'd leave 5cm on each side and close the gap up with timber painted the same colour as the wardrobe, flush around it.

Most I've saw the PAX wardrobe sizes were 50cm, 75cm and 100cm widths
You could purchase an additional 50cm unit to double up on the width of the ends

Design: pop in and ask them, they've seem it all and will think of things you haven't thought about and pieces you didn't find on the website to make things fit best.

It's also good to see it in person. Some lines are just better materials,/more durable finishes and it's hard to tell online

Delivery...yeah. mostly good for me but that horror story is easy to believe. I love how it's a flat fee for your order though. I've gotten it 4times and they were only late once. Never got the phone call more than 5min in advance though. Couldn't help laughing the last time I ordered and the very helpful person in Ikea said they'd ring an hour in advance.

    Hard work?
It's all simple and easy, but if you're doing big items/many items then there's really a lot to do. Don't underestimate this. Take plenty of tea breaks.

For kitchens/wardrobes the problem you're likely to have is walls not being flat/corners square.

Always, ALWAYS read the instructions first (...and follow them)

    Glue?
I wouldn't unless it's your "forever home", one of the best things about Ikea is how you can take the stuff apart when you're moving. Even at that I've never had any problems with stuff coming apart if it put together well.

They use pozi, not Philips(as does everything outside north america except some electrical/mechanical stuff).
You'll end up with a lot if stripped heads and frustration with little chance of getting a replacement if you use Philips.

Good shout on the rest though - a cordless drill (use the torque limiter) is a lifesaver, for the hex heads especially.

The PAX is not a ‘fitted’ wardrobe and they don’t sell it as such.

There is usually a way to fill the gap though.

Don’t expect a lot of customer service at ikea. The more you can figure out for yourself, the better.

You'll get a sliding wardrobe from somewhere like skon fitted exactly to your slave for not much more... And it will be installed for you with whatever innards you need

Had an entire kitchen delivered by Ikea recently and it all went well in terms of date/time except the two lads starting moaning about having to bring it upstairs to a spare bedroom (kitchen was a building site at the time). I had 20 quid in my pocket to take care of them but with their whinging they talked themselves out of it. I wouldnt mind but I got stuck in with them and we had it done in 15 minutes flat between the three of us.
