Looking at FR a lot of aircraft are now taking turns to avoid Icelandic airspace but Rekjavik seems to be still open for business.

Depends what way the wind blows. We should be fine.

Looks like we will just be clear but UK and Northern Europe could be caught.

    We are in Northern Europe.

I said it should miss us, I'm sure by that you could deduce that when I referred to Northern Europe I WASN'T referring to Ireland.

It will mess up transatlantic I'd imagine, especially if a aircraft is going non etops.

Due to fly transatlantic Tuesday. Not a happy camper! :(

Actually this new article has a bit more detail. Looks like this may not be as serious as 2010.

I wonder will the European aviation authorities be less strict this time round with airspace closures.

Iceland has just set up a 200mile aviation exclusion zone.
I would expect so. The 2010 incident actually allowed them to improve their knowledge of the behaviour of ash plumes.

However this volcano has the potential to be a lot bigger (in terms of ash production) than Eyjafjallajokull.

I guess the exclusion zone is currently in place as a precaution to prevent any aircraft being in the vicinity at the moment of the possible eruption.

Flying Copenhagen to Dublin on Thursday - crossing fingers this doesn't kick off properly or has all blown over (or away) by then :(

First post in this corner of boards so greetings to all.

Quick question: Iceland has been affected by frequent volcanic activity since long before our ancestors walked the Earth, so it is reasonable to suggest that the 2010 experience is being blown out of all context - literally - by the media? Surely there have been many such eruptions since the advent of aviation but the circumstances in 2010 were to do with the specific wind conditions at that time?

Things have moved on considerably since 2010. A large proportion of operators now have approved safety cases for operating within areas of predicated ash concentrations (up to a certain limit). Of course conducting flights in visible ash is not permitted. I would be confident that the levels of disruption would be nowhere near 2010.

Seems what is being reported in the media and what is actually happening are different.

The winds were Northerly at the time in 2010. Now, it will only affect Norway apparently. I used to laugh when I saw the Dubliners standing on the train past Wexford, when usually there'd be 10 on board! There was an incident with a BA 747-100 in the 70s off Malaysia due to an ash cloud, which shows the effects of the clouds.

Warning level back down to orange. I'd post a link but I'm a new user apparently - try the ruv.is website for updates.

    As above.
Latest info from Icelandic authorities show's its been downgraded.
So far the eruption has been sub glacial.

Just an update on this. Eruption is ongoing and currently it looks as if the caldera is collapsing. This could take weeks and could result in a large ash plume. Earthquakes are onging at the same time.

I found this blog from a guy who seems to know whats up (although appears a little sensationalist):

That's an understatement. He paints a fairly gloomy picture. Let's hope he's wrong. I'm due to visit Iceland in March so I'd prefer if there was something left of it.

I'm due to fly to the states in 3 weeks. Please just let me go on my holiday. It can erupt and cause all the disruption it likes, hopefully extending my holiday also!
