    Is their an online database for genes for plants and animals detailing what those genes do when expressed

    I looking for where I can search out what genes ie what are the genes in such as what genes are responsible for sugar cane creating that creates sugar will that site help me?

    If you want to look up genes and what they do and a hell of a lot of other info would recommend:

    I don't know the name of a gene so I want to search a database for genes based on what they do ie in type in a search engine "genes reponsible for black hair in humans" and get the name of said gene

    I just typed black hair into the genecards site above and it list off a bunch of genes related to black hair. Dont be afraid to use search bars.

    As you will see there will be a myriad of genes involved. Not just genes but transcription factors and a bunch of other stuff affect gene expression and protein production.

    What answers you might find for your specific query will be hard to find and the answers will not be simple to interpret. But luckily these databases are available for everyone to use and share.
