So ive just been looking at flights to and from dublin airport for a late break in early september... it makes me wonder why is it that flights are exponentially more expensive compared to shannon and cork and the major airports in the uk?

Do you know what exponentially means? And if you do, I'd love to see examples.

Demand is the main one I woild think, also a very popular time of the year to get away. For cheap priced flights book anything up to six months in advance.

Yeah, Sun destinations far cheaper with Ryanair from UK than dublin. Flew from leeds Bradford to ibiza for e100 return in July with jet2 and flying to lanzarote in October for 115 pound return...

Do you know what exponentially means?

your physical approach to a larger than life attitude inflicted by decrepit food addictions

I know its madness, 320 return to palma atm from dublin 150 on same dates with ryanair cheaper again in the UK

    Competition is the great leveller

Yeah why don't Easyjet fly from ROI?

I presume they have more to lose in a competition battle with Ryanair in RoI

Because Ryanair would make it impossible for them to make any profit from doing so.

Shore, if it was easy, everybody would be doin it.😁

Fair enough, but i mean i think there is an apparent need for competition in the airport itself though. What about the likes of monarch, they only do charter though.

Monarch are pretty much all schedule now, from next summer they won't be doing charters at all.

Bad for Easyjet good for the passenger.......lower airfares in the price war. Fares have gone up over the last 5 years and haven't come back down, what ever happened to the 1c flights ?!

what ever happened to the 1c flights ?!

They didn't feel the need to take the huge losses each of those tickets sold entailed.

UK destinations, in my experience, are more expensive from Cork (dunno about Shannon) to the UK almost all the time. Now, I use their cheapest flights, but I've got two €40 return trips booked and have gotten €20 return before to various UK airports.

    150 from where?

And how much would it cost you to fly to the UK to take advantage of cheaper fares there?

I never get this logic of "it's cheaper to fly from the UK" you have to get to the UK to fly from there. And it's a bigger, more competitive market, much like many others.

And the tax on fares from the UK is huge in comparison and should be taken into account

Stheno, you can fly to leeds Bradford where I take the flights from low e30's return...

Fair enough, I know anytime I've compared prices to fly via the UK, the cost of getting to the UK (Usually London tbf) was enough of an equaliser to make it more worthwhile to just book via Dublin direct to my final destination

Yeah, for the hassle you would any to be saving at least 80-100 imo and that would be with a short enough gap between flights. Problem with ryanair and possibly other point to points is if you mISS next flight, that "saving" mightnt be looking so good!

The most I have paid from Edinburgh / Prestwick to Dublin has been £40 return (which is usually €40 if flying from Dublin)

    150 from shannon,

20 quid return to manchester too without a bag, good one if you travel light

Normally from Dublin is cheaper then from Cork

Trying to get connecting flights is something I avoid all the time so manchester would be out for me.

Are you based in Dublin? If you are then you need to factor in the cost of getting to Shannon and any additional costs such as parking etc.

I'd tend to look at the entire cost of the trip, including additional time travelling if it were me.

    Its hit and miss really...

I find the flights are cheaper when Ryanair flies to a less popular Airport.

Aer Lingus do Dublin - Amsterdam and also Cork - Amsterdam
Ryanair do Dublin - Eindhoven (Its usually much cheaper as its a 2 hr journey to Amsterdam on top)

For me its great as I live in Eindhoven :D

Generally speaking if the Airline has no competition on the route it'll be pretty expensive, if they have competition on a route then the price will possibly drop quite a bit.

End of the day, take everything into account.

For example if I was getting from Cork to Dusseldorf, the last time I looked it was cheaper and more convenient to fly Cork - Amsterdam and then get the ICE Directly.

This is easier than getting the Air Coach to Dublin Airport and flying directly to Dusseldorf (and usually cheaper)

It's all about price/convenience, I pay a bit more just to save myself hassle rather than save pennies and lose sleep getting a super early flight or having a complicated journey.
