Hey guys, So i'm going into NUI Galway this year to study commerce, I haven't studied any business subjects in the l.c so i'm quite nervous incase everybody else is way ahead but I think it shouldn't be too advanced...right?
Anyways, I was just wondering do any else of ye going into first year know what the story is with the language choice? Like do we have to choose a language and if so are there different levels? I studied French for l.c and loved it so i'm disappointed it's not on the course to choose from! Are there any other classes that we have to choose from in first year?
    Thanks :)

Im studying commerce too! So nervous because I know no one else doing it. I read online that you can do beginner or advanced and that at the end of the year 25 people can be like transferred to the international commerce course! Still don't know whether to do a language or the other modules! :/

    Hi all,

Commerce in first year is pretty OK. They start all subjects from a level as if you have never studied the subjects before. They also put on quite a few tutorials to enhance your knowledge. Use these, the topics that are addressed in them will usually be somewhere on the final exam for the year.

Someone asked about PAL on a Friday. PAL or peer-assisted learning is a 6-10 week course where 25-30 of the first year group will be thought about university life by second year students who have went through what ye are going through again. They really shouldn't be looked on as teaching modules. It is more of a situation where students in first year can get to know each other and ask questions of the mentors.

Some find it boring and it can be difficult for first year students as they don't like asking questions in front of their peers. But just give it a try anyway. There will be attendance marks for it and I can guarantee that at the end of it most students will have at least met a group of students who they become friendly with for the duration of their stay in NUI Galway. The key is that it is not your usually learning environment. It is a collaborative learning environment where ye get to know each other. Any other questions, feel free to ask and I'll try to answer....Best of luck on ye're journey of Commerce in NUI...:)

As someone mentioned above, PAL is a part of the Skills to Succeed module. But it also carries quite a few marks for that module....And for people who don't know people or are finding it hard to settle in to college, go to them and meet with people.

This is basically me. I was thinking of starting Spanish but when I try and pick my modules online Spanish isn't there. There's just Italian, German and the mix between Skills/Business and Law.
