So 3 weeks ago, I was in a car accident. We are all grand & guy who hit us claimed responsibility, insurance went thru etc etc.
This week repair work is to be carried out. Included in quote is car hire. BUT the mechanic, who is providing car hire shows up with 14 year old piece of junk. I politely decline it because , the airbags in front do not turn off. Really, i was pissed off, it looked unsafe......anyway, i was trying to be nice. So he then shows up with another piece of junk, 8 yr old kia sedona, with no tax, no insurance and no nct.....& tells me to KEEP it clean, & DRIVE carefully (not get caught!!!!)

Should I cancel him off job altogether? Will my insurance claim be messed up? He always does my car but now I think he's a CHANCER

The good folks over in Motors are well versed in insurance matters so I'll move the thread there.

So you declined the first car because the air bags do not turn off, you probably p1ssed him off at that stage.

I assume this is to carry a child seat in the front? Not because he likes head injuries?

If your insurance is paying for car hire, it's so you can rent a car from a car hire company. Not so you can take a ball of scrap from a mechanic.

If the quote is from the mechanic for car hire, it means he is being paid to supply a roadworthy car. Not a chance would I take an old battered yoke.

The guy who's carrying out the repairs is not giving you a hire car, it's a replacement car as you said in the thread title. The difference is that you transfer your insurance to a replacement car and that covers the insurance but you should not accept a car with no NCT as it exposes you to a prosecution and points on your licence.

If your car is off the road then you are entitled to a decent car, I'd get on to the other guy's insurance company and get them to sort it out, either a replacement car from a decent garage or a real hire car from Avis/Hertz etc.

    +1

Give the insurance company a buzz OP. Get them to sort you out with an acceptable rental.

Thank you all for your advice. Yes, the reason I declined the original car was because I have 4 toddlers and putting one in the front (which I hate to do) requires turning off the airbag.

Just wondering, would it turn any of you off the mechanic? I am thinking, if he's cutting corners here & acting stupid, should he be repairing my car?

Personally wouldn't use a mechanic who thinks it's acceptable to give a customer a ball of scrap with no nct. Was it even taxed?

No nct, no tax, no insurance. Big naked windscreen!

I would not let him repair my car,and I would be onto the ins. co and let them sort it out. An un taxed and un NCT'd car is unroadworthy

OP, are you aware that if the other party has accepted liability then you are entitled to get your car repaired at a garage of your choice?

Well the insurance is on you, but no tax and nct, I would not be letting him near my car after that.

I have to ask, where did you accept as a repair garage?

I was rear-ended in a minor tip before, and the girl's insurance AXA called me the next day and asked if I'd agree to have the car assessed by their preferred shop before making any decisions, and that a replacement car would be made available. I was directed to a thoroughly professional outfit, who replaced my rear bumper and who had a guy from Enterprise on site with a relatively new car hired out to me on the spot.

I wouldn't accept anything less from either my insurance, or from the the other party's insurance.

What sort of fucking clown brings you a replacement car that isn't road legal?
