Petrol will be cheaper to insure and tax
Diesel will use less fuel which is also cheaper fuel
Diesel will be more powerful and nicer to drive.
Petrol car will be cheaper to buy

Those 1.4 Golfs aren't great though, have a fair love for oil as they get old and the gearboxes can be soft in them. I'd go for a TDi if hell bent on a Golf or if going petrol chose something other than a Golf.

Would agree with this. It depends what age of car you are talking about but a few years ago I went directly from a petrol golf to a diesel... No comparison. The petrol was keen on oil too. They are undoubtably one of the best out there in diesel but as suggested, there are better petrol cars for the money.

If you are set on petrol it's hard to beat the Honda Civic, although insurance cost can be a factor for young drivers. Corolla/Auris is always a good bet although some models did have some oil issues and these Marques command a premium over others. On a budget have a look at the Mazda 3..drove one for a few days a couple of years ago while my own diesel car was in the garage and found it very economical in comparison to Focus, Astras etc I had previously driven. And a lot more comfortable.

I don't really get the infatuation with young lads and VAG cars in general, there are plenty of alternatives that are just as good if not better in both petrol and diesel form, corolla, focus etc. Insurance on a diesel car like one of them will be a fair bit cheaper than anything from the Volkswagen or Audi group, as they aren't the typical young lad car.

Neither do I. I cannot think of a more overrated car than a 1.4 Golf. Aside from the fancy dashboard and excellent (for the time) levels of safety equipment, I cannot think of a single thing it does well.

What vintage Golf is the OP interested in. If the Mk4 (98-03), the 1.9 TDI is the only way to go as long as it's not been abused (which might be difficult given the TDI Golf's popularity with some young men), on the other hand if it's the Mk5 (04-09) I'd go for the 1.6 FSI petrol (not the regular 1.6 as that engine is as old as the hills and can suffer from gearbox issues), it's faster than the TDI and as it's got direct injection not to mention a six speed gearbox, is pretty good on mpg as well.
