Check this cute guy out. What kind of caterpillar is this? Very big and surprisingly heavy. Today August 20th, West Clare by the sea.

I've been checking the Fuschia in the garden regularly, but no joy yet!

My 5 year old was over the moon as we had her bug box with us. He's back in the fuchsias now. Really cute bug.

Found two of them yesterday after seeing this thread during the week! They're fairly hefty buckos alright. Are they feeding on rosebay willowherb leaves or roots? (Sorry if this a daft question). I have planted quite a bit of it in my lawn/meadow this year, but I found them crawling along the ground, not in the plants so I was just wondering what exactly they feed on.

They feed on the leaves of the willow herb and then go to the ground to pupate under leaves.

Found this fella when I was turning over my spud plot. Showed everyone then covered him back over. Made my day!
