Got a car last month, no sign of the VRC

    Feck it anyway.
I did a trade with a guy on Adverts, his Ford Focus estate for my Renault Scenic, no problems there.
We exchanged VRC's, mine signed by myself and his signed by his girlfriend, who owned the car.
Over a month later, still no sign of the VRC.
And, as the car is out of tax since Jan 14, I can't drive it on the road either, for fear of being lifted by the Gardai.
I have texted him and, early on, he assured me the cert was sent in, but over a month on and he stopped responding and I am not sure what to do next.
I'm thinking of calling the Gardai on this, and asking for advice.
I don't want to be screwed with arrears either, or wind up in court.

    Any advice?
    Thanks

You can declare yourself the registered owner. Contact the DTTS at the address linked below and they will advise you on the correct procedure. Afaik it involves getting a main dealer to formally verify the car's VIN then you signing a declaration form in the presence of a Garda. There may be a fee for the new documents and I'd expect the main dealer would require payment for his services. I doubt a Garda would be able to advise you other than to say it's your responsibility to ensure you have the necessary documentation, and especially when there is no evidence the other guy didn't do his part. If I was him I'd probably get peeved off too.

You can get the form to transfer the ownership using a deceleration you can get from the tax office.

It will involve a trip to a garage to checked the vin and solicitor to witness you signing.

Happened to me last year. My details were actually in the system I just hadn't received the physical cert in the post. Seems the office in Shannon have a habit of losing them. I contacted motortax@transport.ie and they advised me to report it missing and get a form signed by a garda. At first I was indignant. No way did I want to pay the 12 euros to replace a form I never received!
Instead I just procrastinated for a good while.

Eventually it came around to NCT time and I thought I better get it sorted. Had a chat with a garda in henry street. He said that it happens all the time. He said they are not sent registered post so the onus is on them to prove you received it. He advised me to pay nothing.

I was in a rush and the NCT was soon so I just paid.

Anyways, send them a mail. The office in shannon were probably making paper airplanes out of them again.

You might as well check the reg on motortax.ie and see if there was a change of ownership done but waiting for VLC to be issued.
TBH after 4 weeks I'd expect the changeover to be done even if the new cert hasn't yet been posted.

I rang the guy today and he assures me the cert was posted along with three others and none of them have come back yet.
I'll give him a little longer then take the steps described above.
    Thanks for the advice.

That sounds fierce familiar to me, I bought a car off a guy a while ago and had to wait nearly two months for the thing to show up, got the same excuse, he wasn't from new ross by any chance? :pac:

No, it's Swords, and while he was dismissive the first time I called a few weeks ago this time he was a lot more concerned with the delay.
Hopefully it'll spur him on to put it right.

If you put your reg into the motor tax website it will tell you if the vehicle has been transferred recently. But sometimes it can take a very long time for them to do even though a month is a bit ridiculous. Anyway here's the site.
