Finally in the market for a road bike and as I love my Scott hybrid have started the search with their range of road bikes. Could potentially stretch to about 1000 and have seen one listed at that price. That's the speedster 30 with tiagra group set and a carbon/alloy fork.

The speedster 40 is 120 cheaper with the sora group set. Given that I can afford the 30 would I regret not going for it?

Not totally set on the Scott yet as I want to try it out first so any other suggestions gratefully recieved. Thanks. :)

Scotts are hot. Get the tiagra if you can afford it.

Seems to be the general consensus from all that I've read alright.

I've got a speedster 30. I put a set of mavic kyrsium on it last year. Its a great bike and the wheel upgrade makes it even better

I got an s30 as my first road bike - it's a very good entry level bike. After about a year or two on it I decided to upgrade and got a 2nd hand full carbon with sram red for the same price as the new s30.

I would definitely go for the 2nd hand carbon if doing it again - no comparison between the two bikes.

If you're set on an s30 then maybe consider a 2nd hand one and you would have enough for a set of good wheels too, which make a massive difference to the bike.

    Good luck!

I will be using the LBS which doesn't have a 2nd hand section so although I hear ya its not something I'm keen on at this point in time. Considering the shop does free servicing as long as I own the bike too I think its worth the extra outlay initially. If I decide on new wheels they can be a Christmas or birthday pressie to myself. :)

That's obviously really good information to have. Thank you. If I go with the speedster I'll question the shop about the recall.

Have the 2012 S20 and love it. Put Mavic wheels on her last summer due to being a bigger lad. Came for a Trek 1.2 and the difference was night and day.

I have been riding the 2013 Speedster 40 for over a year now. Really enjoyable bike. The wheels are the weakness though. Replaced them with campagnolo khamsins. The grouoset was a mix between sora new and tiagra. I've fully upgraded all of that to 105 5700 since.

For an ALU frame it is very stiff. Averages about 9.5kg when I'm headed out. Responds well to input and handles well. Worth a test ride though.

The entry level components were fine, but the wheels do take from it. A club member also got the S40 and had the same spoke breaking problem with the rear wheel. So if you do end up getting a speedster and have any problems with spokes get some new wheels ;)
