Charging a golf battery with a car charger

    Hi all,

    Left the charger for my golf cart down the country, would it be okay to use a car charger on the golf battery as it will be a few weeks until I can pick up the right charger.

    A trolley battery is a bit different from a car battery in the way it charges, but many car chargers (just not all) will be able to charge a deep cycle battery too. It's something to do with charging stages, a trolley battery charger is 3 stage and some car chargers would be 2 stage.
    I think that's why you can keep a trolley battery plugged in for weeks with the charger only giving it a trickle, but you wouldn't keep a car battery plugged in for weeks.
    I personally wouldn't mess around with it unless I knew what I was doing, which I definitely don't.

    Thanks Senna for the advice. Thought there was something different between batteries.

    Friend of mine bought a lithium battery recently and that came with a charger, I think I'll ask him for a loan of his old charger until I get my own back.

    Just a word of warning as lithium chargers are different to the regular ones . Certainly you cannot charge your lithium battery with the older chargers , not sure of it's ok in reverse . In error I charged my new lithium battery to my old power caddy charger . When I mentioned it to our golf pro he reckoned I was lucky to have gotten away with it and to have not done any damage.

    General rule of thumb is you should be safe if the charger charges at about 10% of the batteries capacity. So if you have a 30 Ah battery a 3 or 5 Amp charger should be fine for 10 hours.

    Hi all,

    Got a loan of an old charger from a friend.

    Just to let you know that my motorcycle charger didn't/couldn't charge the golf battery (lead acid). Car charger did but went very hot.

    I think the construction of golf lead acid batteries are designed for a trickle charge.

    I have a trickle charger for my motorbike but have never tried it. I also have on from an old RC Car which trickle charges, wonder would that do as back up??
