Ignition barrel

I have a 93 Mazda 323 and some scumbags tried to rob it. In their failed attempt they damaged the ignition. The key can still go in and it will make a 1/4 turn but then jams.

Cant really afford a mechanic but would definitely have a bash off fixing it myself if someone could suggest any possible fixes. Thanks in advance

Scum !! Not something you'd want to be going fixing urself IMO :) are u not covered under insurance to have it repaired ? As it was an attempted theft ?

Be hard to source but breakers or ebay might have barrel and key

If the key turns to the first point where it unlocks the steering wheel (before accessories "on" position) it makes it very easy to replace.
    Certainly a DIY job.

take off the casing around the steering wheel.

then turn your key as far as it will go

around the ignition barell there is a small hole

stick a pin into the hole

turn your key and the barrell should pop out.

there is a scrapyard in kilcock co.kildare tha have over 3000 cars you just walk out into the scrapyard and you can take the barrell out of another car that they have a key for.

    good luck

Rang every breaker in the country yesterday with no joy. Shes just too old. Cant claim off the insurance because I have a claim from 4 years ago for a tip I had.

On the plus side I was able to "hotwire" the car so now I can at least drive it somewhere to get it fixed. From spending the day googling yesterday I would have to take off the entire locking mechanism to replace it, that job might just be too big for me.

Maybe its time to send her to Auto Heaven

Why not get a killswitch and just keep hotwiring it :)

Cause the damn NCT is just up and she wont pass without an ignition. Luckily I only taxes her for 3 months. Poor little Mazda, she had a god life. Only 58k miles up on her too.

Have you tried on eBay for people breaking them in the U.K.?

I have. They're like gold dust but there have been some developments.

I went out this evening to wash off the dust powder form the cops and fix the trim on the windscreen and I said to myself "sure I'll give it another go". Inserted the key and BAM she turned all the way. So I put the ignition back together and now all i have to do is fix the hazard switch and reassemble the casing around the steering wheel.

I have never been so fond of a little car in all my life
