Schedule of events now up on the website (http://www.waterfordharvestfestival.ie/), looking forward to checking out the craft beer fest. Seems like it is more local this year, hopefully overall the mistakes of last year have been learned from and this years festival is a good one

As far as I know they have reverted back to the original team behind it after last years event.

Last year was awful disappointing, let's hope it's back to what it was.

Brochure looks good for this year, seems to have returned to its roots a bit, hope the weather shines now.

Essentially they gave the running of it to a Dublin based event management company , who did it their way and their prices, didn't go down well at all, not supported and the result was a ball of ****e, lesson learned one hopes.

They do seem to have turned it around this year and the feedback seems to be good for 2014.

Hi people, I keep hearing how bad last year was. Can anyone explain why? Im just curious as I missed last year due to illness and every other year was o great..

I remember the 1st Harvest Festival (not that it was decades ago, it was probably only 3 or 4 years) but the quay was a great place to be for the big Saturday/Sunday market. The organizers were actually worried that at a certain point of the day it would have been too crowded and been unsafe. So many stalls regarding food and arts were there, and plenty of choice. Also included a free gig on the Saturday night aswell.

Roll onto last year, and it was a big difference. The food stalls were small, lack of options and lack of local restaurants. The area outside the Glass felt way too open, and almost dead, as the food stands were just segregated into little squares, instead of being spread out. The area in the carpark was nice - fine big marquee and drink, but again - very lacking in local products anywhere (unless Dinky Donuts are made in the City).

We went to a talk in the Town Hall - Cost 15euro - called the Theatre Of Food. What the site said: "Harvest Festival welcomes its first Theatre of Food event in 2013. A dedicated food area, Theatre of Food serves as a homage to all things gastronomic, with a host of activities including food demos from some of Ireland’s leading chefs, wine tasting, food sampling, demos, cookery tips and more from a who’s who of Ireland’s chefs, food writers and bloggers."

What we got was a chef trying to figure out how the controls on the stove worked for half an hour and hastily cooked 2 meals. With the tasters you could literally pick up with one toothpick what was handed out. That was it. Never again.

I of course hope that this years will be a lot better, and return to its roots of a few years ago.

I think it definitely lost its way last year. The 2012 event was superb, so all they need to do is the same as they did then, and then pray the weather will be good!

Lads can we name the organiser for the event last year? They really did make a hames of it and shouldnt really get away with it scot free!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,209 ✭✭✭johnnykilo

Can anyone tell me what road closures are in place? Can't seem to find decent info on it. From the Harvest website it looks like the Mall is closed all weekend, and from the Bus Eireann website it says the Quay is closed on Sunday?

If you go on to the Council website - waterfordcouncil.ie there's a link there to road closures for harvest festival.

For some reason this site won't let me post the link directly so I've done the best I can here:

Road closure information can be found here : waterfordcouncil dot ie/en/Resident/Parking,Travel,and,Roads/News/MainBody,48111,en.html

But please note that Bolton Street car park will NOT be affected.

The Mall certainly is today (from the Bishops Palace/Parnell St junction to to the Dunmore Road junction).

Good atmosphere down there today. Went down and had lunch watching the excellent Ashley Sheehan playing while sun was shining. Plenty of food selections and prices reasonable. Well done to all involved. Looking forward to park tomorrow with kids

Lovely evening in at the festival tonight, funny moment when one of the pigs escaped and was chased down while King Kong Company was playing.

Beer festival a little disappointing, not enough tables and seats being the main quibble. Some lovely craft beers to be had though, and looking forward to sampling some more tomorrow night. Funny seeing people getting Spaten/Carlsberg etc from the Munster though, would have thought the point to paying into a local craft beer even was to take the opportunity to sample the fare the local breweries had on offer

Anyone notice theres no toilets what so ever on the Mall, had to be nice to those in the Theatre Royal to use their toilets. Surely toilets are a must when theres drinks and food.

Noticed that earlier as I walked through there. 4 tables with 6 chairs each in total. Still judging from some of the texts and FB posts it sounds like great crack

    Harvest traffic chaos....
The main traffic artery through town closed for what exactly?
Was the Bolton st car park too big for them?

Because in your mind city's are for cars not people right? I reckon there're was more people walking on the mall today than drive it in a week.

The harvest festival is about people having fun, for us to enjoy our city, to take time out and for the rest of the country to see that this is a great city than knows how to have a great time!

And if you think that a little traffic delay is to great a price for that then your head ain't screwed on right.

On a positive note, where do I get hot rod decals for my wheelbarrow?

Across the bridge, up bridge st, across Ballybricken, down castle st, out Johnstown. It usually take me 12 mins to get to work, today it took me 13 mins.

As someone who uses The Mall to drive to and from work, I have no issue with it being closed for a few days. There's plenty of alternate routes which cause no additional delays to getting home.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,924 ✭✭✭✭BuffyBot

While the detour by the park is a bit annoying (school time Friday afternoon was a bit of a PITA), it's hardly a 18 mile round trip..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 323 ✭✭deisediva

While I think the festival is great for city why they need to close the mall I don't know.
The first year they had it on quay was grand or they could use centre of town.
To see the alternative route for the heavy traffic pass up by 8 schools in total last Thursday and Friday was madness don't know how there was not an accident the roads around park are bad enough on a normal school day never mind all the traffic extra due to the Mall being closed for few days

Newfoundland were outstanding at the beer festival last night

The bands at the craft beer festival were indeed fantastic . I was surprised it all finished up at ten o'clock thought they could have done with a DJ /music till later. I paid in at about nine o'clock not realising there was only an hour left . Also could have done with tables and chairs , but a great atmosphere all the same.

Thoroughly enjoyed our trip to the festival today. I especially admired the colourful wheelbarrows dotted around the place. They were planted with herbs and looked amazing. Does anyone know if these are for sale or who makes them ??

Ballybeg Greens made the wheelbarrows for the festival, they looked fantastic. :)

Firstly, I'm a blow in from Dublin so go easy!

Secondly, it always surprises me the amount of negativity on this forum. Waterford is ravaged by unemployment, the recession etc... yet some local folk, in conjunction with Waterford City Council, put on great festivals such as this, Oktoberfest Beag, Spraoi, Winterval etc... For a small city you sure punch way above your weight! There are a lot of really good things going on in Waterford, and with regard to yesterday, it's nice that positive news is to the fore about the city.

Spent yesterday afternoon in at the Harvest Festival with the other half and two young kids and had a ball. Great weather, large crowds, great food and drink, fantastic music, ample parking, roads closed off to allow easy movement for pedestrians and no feeling that anyone was trying to rip us off.

A seriously good afternoon was had by us and the people we net. With the crowds around town yesterday, and the feel good atmosphere, it seems the festival was embraced by all.

Raging I'll be missing Oktoberfest but Winterval has been great the last couple of years so we'll be inviting family down to it again this year.

Congrats to organisers of Harvest Festival, we had a fantastic time.

Harvest festival was fantastic again, really well organised, weather helped of course. usual minority amount of complainers, (Mall closed) but sure if they moved it to carpark, they would complain that its too far from heart of city centre/shopping area/VT.

Metalman's 'Can Prototype No.1' was highlight for me, delicious. Bought bit of local produce too, sourdough bread, honey etc.

Nice one Bobby, there is occasionally posts from outside the SE on here saying how great a time they had at an event here but unfortunately, Irish people love to whinge no matter what because on here we have a couple of know it alls on how to run an event, carry out civil engineering works, get things done in politics etc.

Loved that drink too but found by the end there was a real taste of treacle to it. Great drink though and would love to see what it's like in cans.

...and there's another success story that Waterford has, it's microbreweries. In Metalman you have one of the best Irish Pale Ale's and a drink that stands up to what breweries internationally have to offer and with Dungarvan you have fantastic drinks packaged and marketed to the highest levels.

I fully agree that the mall should be closed, it was lovely seeing tourists walk out of Waterford Crystal and just saying wow!

but I parked in short course and when i was packing the kids back into the car a woman stopped her car, she was in tears, she was coming from dunmore east, going to Rosslare, she had made 2 mistakes taking the detour and spent 40 going around in circles.

when she calmed down, she followed me over the bridge and I hope she made her ferry.

I know this happens every time there's a detour but the signage is so important.

I hate those signs that don't come into town but that lady would have been much better off taking a left at the hospital and following the ring road to carrickpherish.

anyway i loved festival, was just big enough to see everything in a few hours. the helpers in new st gardens were so nice.

Must say yesterday was the first time I took the kids to new street gardens. It is a great spot to have in the city centre.
Lots going on there for kids they spent ages making noise on the drums guy running it was lovely. Also puppet show and load of other stuff going on there.
Great to see something that was all done on a volunteer basis just sorry it took me so long to take the kids in to it as have been told lots went on there over the summer.
Roll on now Winterval its only 100 Days to Xmas:)

Great festival. Good selection of foods washed down with a range of craft beers. Particularly liked the Chameleon Equinox and Barrelhead Porter..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,081 ✭✭✭fricatus

Got into Cathedral Square for a venison blaa and saw some tangoing. Later on picked up a friend at the station and got down to the Mall to hear Newfoundland, and eat bratwurst and falafel. Terrific buzz, just a real pity I didn't get in for the Sunday :(

Cracking festival though... well done to the organisers! :D
