I have a Lexmark X1180 all in one. Hadn't used it for a while as it ran out of ink and haven't needed it. Iput new ink cartridges in on Friday and although colour works fine it refuses to recognise that a black cartridge is inserted.

    Any thoughts/ideas welcome.

Does an error message display or does the black cartridge not print, blank output?

Can't say that this will definitely work, but it may be worth a shot.

If the message that the cartridges are still not being recognized by the printer,
press ink change button ( once to move cartridges holder to change cartridges position.)
remove all original cartridges and switch the printer off at the wall socket
for 1 hours, this will reset your printer and then put them in at the same time and pushed them down hard.
make sure that the cartridges are fully pressed down and locked down into place.

    Turn on printer,

Then press ink change button(just like you would replace
the original Epson ⓒ ink-jet cartridges)

I go into the solution centre, click to install new cartridge and for the black it shows "No Cartridge" even though there is a new one in place. I take it out, put it back in, go through the procedure again and it still shows no cartridge.

As Y said, it's just failing to recognise that there is a cartridge in place. Weird.

I think I need to buy a new printer as I'm wasting too much time over this and have things to print. The printer is quite a few years old anyway but has always worked without any probs. Old age has set in, and I know that feeling:(.

I'll give this a try but bear in mind that it's a Lexmark not an Epson.

Is it a genuine cartridge? Try wiping the chip carefully with some rubbing alcohol if you have any, likewise clean the print head at the base of the cartridge with the alcohol.
If the cartridge worked before and won't now it could be the chip has become damaged due to lack of use or the printer itself. I'd say it's the cartridge though

I really hate printers... This is what I feel like doing to every printer I am asked to fix

Thanks for the replies. I've tried everything and got nowhere so it's time for a new one. I've had this one for over 10 years so can't complain. I'll just keep using it for colour until I've used up the 2 new colour cartridges that I recently bought!.

I don't do a lot of printing so any comments about this one?

    EpsonExpression Home XP-212

    Again, many thanks
