    Hi Folks,
Wondering if anyone in North Dublin Area could clear a "Steering Lock Defective light" on 07 BMW 320D? I hear it is a common issue and can be recitfied with a SW Update?

    Thanks

I would have your battery checked and if it's the original it could possibly need to be changed, same happened me earlier this year, because the battery was on its way out the steering lock got jammed half way between locked and unlocked, had to be flat bedded away and reset with autologic!

Thanks. May try SW re-program first before going through the hassle of a new battery!
Im aware that a new battery needs a computer re-programming! Nightmare.

Only on the 3 Series that has idrive does the battery need to be recoded afaik.

BTW I've heard that the steering lock issue can be with a dodgy sensor but the cheapest thing first would obviously get the fault code scanned and then see if a software update cures it.

Motor Confidence are BMW specialists in Ballycoolin if your stuck.

Coding a new battery is a two minute job.

The kit to do it costs a fortune, but the punter never gets that part of the equation when he's asked for 30 bucks...

Anyone recommend anyone or can anyone clear the fault light?

Get that code cleared quick, mine started coming on after the battery went dead, I left it with the yellow code for about 5 weeks. A week before it was due for checkup in M&G the Red lock came and car was flat bedded.

I heard that the after a certain amount of time/starts with the yellow light it will change to red and then you are goosed, the auto cars need to be flat bedded. (this could happen in an underground car park and you'll need to get the lock replaced on the spot)

Straffan motors near Maynooth did it for me

Bmstuff is a user on here really good at the coding aspect and worth giving a pm.
But personally in your situation it get to motorconfidence or some garage to ensure nothing else is wrong.

Thanks Guys. I have been to a Garage. Looking to replace steering column and going to cost 1100 euro! There is nothing wrong with steering, steering column or steering lock.
    Car driving fine.
Want to try SW Fix/Alarm clear before spending such money on work that I do not think needs done. Apparently this is a real common issue in BMW's. Wonder why no re-call has been done.

I had to get the steering column changed on my 320d (albeit a 05 model). The failed unit was not a separate part on that model (hopefully yours is different). I got a BMW mechanic to replace mine in his own home garage with the total cost being less than 500.

Going through the main dealer where he worked would have cost me about 1k.

For my car (an n57 engine) it's most definitely a hardware problem and not something that can be fixed via software. Worth fixing now because an intermittent yellow will soon turn to a permanent red light and then you're stranded.
