Choosing Broadband, Download speed?

Hi, currently moving address and need to get broadband in.

Both options I am looking at (see below) are from UPC, 'Fibre 60 Chat with Freetime World' and 'Fibre Power 120Mb Limited with Freetime World'.

Fibre 60 Chat with Freetime World = Up to 60Mb/s download speed, Unlimited monthly data allowance, Free setup, Line rental included, Free calls included,
    18 month contract.

Fibre Power 120Mb Limited with Freetime World = Up to 120Mb/s download speed, 30 GB per month data allowance, Free setup, Line rental included, Free calls included, 18 month contract.

My dilemma is: Fibre 120 has 120Mb/s download speed but a 30GB data usage allowance where as Fibre 60 has only half the download speed but unlimited data.

I reckon 30GB is just enough data, I could be pushing it some months so the unlimited (Fibre 60) seems the best option but the last thing I want is a slow connection.

Now where I live we currently have Eircom broadband, never had any issues with its speed and I just did a broadband speed test which gave me: 2.11Mb/s.

My question to you is: Do I really need to worry about the download speed they advertise, e.g. 120Mb/s or 6Mb/s if 2.11Mb/s seems to be good enough for what I want?

If you're on 2.1Mbps, then you're hardly going to feel that 60Mbps is sluggish.

30GB is way too little for most people.

I'd reccomend going for the unlimited package.

Thanks, yea it seems straight forward i.e. 60 being a bigger number than 2.1 .

They advertise the 60Mb/s as being their max download speed but I guess it never gets near that. Once it is over 2Mb/s I will be happy as I never have issues streaming etc... at the moment.

Do you use UPC yourself? Is there any hidden costs etc.. that I should be aware of?

Definitely go with the unlimited option.

Also given you're going from just over 2Mb to 60Mb it's probably gonna feel blazing fast for you.

You will get the full 60Mb

I am on the 200Mb package and get 200-220Mb

Get the 60mb unlimited. Offering 120mb with a 30gb cap is pointless. It's really just sign up bait. You will almost certainly go over it and be forced onto a more expensive unlimited package. It's sole purpose is to lure people in with a low price.

If you find 2.1mb usable then 60mb will be a revelation to you. I currently have 7mb at home and find it unbearable. It's fine for one person, but in the evenings when everyone in the house is using it to stream video it quickly degenerates into a frustrating experience for all.

Re sign up bait - To be fair, they have a 60mb limited too which is even cheaper.

It doesn't always follow that the more data you use per month the faster you need it.

I wouldn't chance the limited unless I knew I'd be well under 30gb, especially where a promotion applies.
There's a good chance that the 60mb speed would eventually be increased too.
