I am going up from Cork on Monday with the intention of buying a car at Billy Griffins. What's he like to deal with would you recommend him?

What car is it? Sometimes its more the car faults than the dealers fault!

    Any link to advert?

    Massively overpriced.
Seems cheap compared to other garages a local garage near me has a 2000 yaris for 2k and he is only an independent small time operator with no employees.

his own personal manner is quite abrupt , think he only offers warranties on cars 2008 on which is stupid. would make sure get car well checked over first and as with all used car dealers take what they say with a pinch of salt

Bought a second car off him 2 months ago ( I have company car).
Got warranty and was easy to deal with(David) great young guy.
Had small problem with window took it back and was done no bother.
I do think he only gives warranty on 2008 up as it is done through other group.
A lot of cowboys on that Naas road area names seem to change every week.

He is also now SIMI for what its worth.

Simi isn't worth the paper its wrote on.
Buying a car of a dealer without warranty is stupid
Honestly if a dealer isn't willing to stand over the quality of a car on his forecourt, I wouldn't be giving him a premium to a buy a car of him. It just screams that there is something wrong with the car, or else Ill have trouble with any comeback under Sales of goods act.

Not many garages/dealers will give much in the way of warranty on 14/15 year old cars. Better off buying private in this age/price range of cars where the owner actually knows the car and can answer specific questions. The risk is nearly the same unless you plan to drive the car back to Dublin from Cork with an issue only to be fobbed off.

Let's face it. You don't like him, no matter what other people say.

I don't like any shady car dealer to be honest

Did you have a bad experience with them? Do tell.

Went to view a car with a friend there a while back, asked the few questions that you'd ask about a car, such as service history, has it ever been crashed, mileage, imported, the general stuff. Asked about warranty, sales man mentioned nope no warranty at all on it as its an older car, that its sold as seen, which when a dealer says that, sets alarm bells ringing.
No flexibility on price, which was higher than advertised and car was rough as feck.
Not to mention the manner in which the salesman acted...quite rough.
Friend ended up buying a much better car at a lower price privately.

If you do a quick search on here, you'll find I'm not the only one who has these opinions of him.

They're only his terms & conditions really. He's not going to give the car away. You'll find loads of people on here who have had good dealings with him. You get no guarantee with a privately bought car, regardless of the year.

Of course you don't,,,but why pay a dealer premium for a private sale.
Yes Sales of Goods Act covers you, but good luck with having an easy time with that if he isn't willing to give any sort of a warranty

Theres a difference between haggling and giving the car away

Sounds like you have a vested interest, with such a defence of him.

With over 17,000 cars sold in 30 years, Bill Griffin surely has one happy customer? :D

You know he's not giving warranty on older cars, he doesn't have to haggle if he don't want to. No one forces you to pay it, free choice.

2000 Yaris the ad was taken down earlier, I suppose he was hounded with calls from people that didn't understand the word sold.

I don't understand the concept of leaving an advert up with SOLD written on it.

If its gone, why not take the advert down?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Its so you can use the advert again for another car.
