Charter Revision: Advertising

This is the second part of the F&F Charter to be revised. If the first bit was more advisory than regulatory then this bit is the opposite.

Inconsistencies between our charter and the overall site rules have been found and this revision is to bring ours into line with the current site rules.

There really isn't any room to change the meat of it. However, if there's any queries about what it means we will endeavour to explain.

The overall intent of the section is to keep F&F free of adverts and any hassle they may cause so it's fit and tidy for its purpose, discussion.

    ********

    3. Advertising / Surveys / Market Research

The Farming & Forestry forum is not the place for ads.If you wish to advertise an item 'for sale' or 'wanted', then please use www.adverts.ie or similar.

You may not link to adverts in your posts on this forum, whether they are yours or others, regardless of their site of origin (adverts.ie, donedeal, ebay, etc.)

Linking to 'for sale' machinery/stock/etc. for discussion purposes is perfectly valid.

Unsolicited advertising/promotion by anyone, including 'new' posters, will be regarded as SPAM and dealt with as such.

The name of your business should not be part of your avatar/username as that will cause a forum-ban and referral to higher authority (admin).

A simple link to your business in your signature is allowed.

Surveys, Market Research, and other data/information gathering methods are dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

If you wish to engage with the members of the Farming & Forestry forum in any such endeavour, you MUST FIRST contact the forum moderators.

You will have to explain your intentions in order to satisfy the moderators that your activity is of interest, and potentially of benefit, to the forum and the farming community in general.

The final decision rests with the moderators and is not up for debate.

The aim of argument, or of discussion, should not be victory, but progress. Joseph Joubert

The ultimate purpose of debate is not to produce consensus. It's to promote critical thinking.

So can i clear something up here as i am a bit confused. In section 3, it states You are not allowed to link to done deal etc seems to be in one part but it is ok to link to for sale machinery is in another part.

so if a lad came on asking about what 4wd tractor would,be best for 10k as an example, is it a breach to post a link to one on done deal as part of the discussion?

mods lets call a spade, a spade here

no 1 - the rules are all over the place and have been for sometime.

no 2 - it takes 3 close on 4 weeks to get a price off boards office for advertising

no 3 - prices are crazy.

Tubby, you can link to an ad for the purposes you describe, essentially discussion, which is what the forum is about.

Linking to your own, or a friends, ad purely to gain exposure (i.e. advertising) is not allowed.

We are discussing how to change the wording to clarify that issue and avoid confusion.

Tubby I fell for that post as well on Friday night and posted a scathing response against Boards.ie
However upon re-reading the original thread I realised that it was ok to link and discuss simular ad's on Donedeal as long as you were not the person who was trying to sell the product, tractor, plough.
I then deleted my original scathing post.

BP, you weren't scathing just.... clear in your meaning. :)

Fair enough, though unless I'm missing something, the spade you are calling a spade doesn't really seem to be in the scope of this thread  But I'll answer as best I can.

#1. The whole point of going through the charter is to consolidate the rules in one place, and make them as clear as possible, while eliminating any waffle. Please bear with us while we do that, and help us by commenting as you are in the charter revision threads that we are putting up here.

#2. That's something that you will have to take up with boards.ie themselves - it has nothing to do with us and we don't have any say in how boards.ie operates.

    #3. See #2

no 1 . - We had been told previously on F&F that we could link our own items for sale only if they were on adverts.ie . thats from a mod. and is the reason adverts.ie got a farm section. I use adverts.ie the odd time but recently find it bad value for money.
    Goal posts have moved again

no 2 - we are back to the mods passing the blame to everyone else again.

    no 3 - as no2

The constant sideswipes at moderators and moderation wear thin, and don't add anything to the thread. Please consider that when posting again.

    Goal posts have moved again

To clarify once again, there is a hierarchy in place that we operate within, something that most users are aware of:

    • Boards.ie employees (Dav, for the most part)
    • Administrators
    • Category Moderators
    • Moderators <<myself, .Kovu., Oldtree, Greysides

While we get to have a fair amount of leeway in establishing the charter of the fora that we moderate (which is why these threads are here - to allow posters to have some input into that process), and over how strictly we moderate the forum, the charter that we establish still has to fall in line with the sitewide rules. And seeing that a few posters asked us for clarification on the point of advertising, a month ago we specifically asked admin what the official position was on posting links to adverts.ie was, and the response was crystal clear - posting links to ads in Adverts is simply advertising. If this conflicts with the charter then I'm afraid the charter will need to be brought into line with site rules.

Regarding adverts.ie itself - it originally started as a small part of Boards and as it grew, broke off into a separate company of its own, and they have a common owner. From our point of view now, it gets treated no differently than ads linked from donedeal, gumtree, eBay, so on and so forth. Dav explains the link between boards.ie and adverts.ie quite clearly here

If you're disgruntled with that, then that's your right. But using threads such as this to take potshots at the moderators who have no powers to change site policy is a fruitless endeavour, not to mention insulting to the moderators in question. If you do want to follow up on this (and I hope that you do), then please take it up with the people who call the shots on that particular decision, and who might be able to do something to change it. If you genuinely want to see change, then I'll look forward to your thread in the feedback forum.

In the meantime I'll let admin/Dav know of your concerns, in the hope that they can reply and explain once and for all that sitewide decisions are truly out of moderators hands.

Can I make a suggestion in relation to stuff for sale?

Lots of other communities have a single thread that allows people to just list anything they have up for sale with no discussion. If someone wants to talk about it, they can go to the site the ad's hosted on - be it Adverts or Done Deal or eBay etc. It's worked out quite well elsewhere and I think it could work here. Obviously I would prefer to see people using Adverts, it's our sister company and the people who work there are my friends and colleagues :)

    ^^^

This idea is actually something we've been discussing in the F&F mods forum earlier today, and were going to chat to you Dav and get your opinion on it. But seeing as you've brought it up here, if you are willing to sign off on a single sticky thread as you've described, and posters are happy with that, we can create said thread and amend the charter accordingly.

Why no discussion? In other forums on boards eg the bangernomics thread, people are allowed to discuss the pros and cons of cars for sale, even cars they own.
Can we not be allowed to do the same eg to discuss livestock or machinery for sale on adverts or donedeal, even with items we might have for sale?

I don't ever remember anyone really advertising something they had for sale on here

Fair point... is there really a call for the ability to advertise something for sale in F&F?? or is it something that can't simply be done on the adverts/donedeal/gumtree site itself?

Probably not a need for a "for sale" sticky, but how about a "free to a good home/boardie" section?

Howdy all, thanks for suggestions and feedback to this section of the Charter.

The changes are now in place and can be seen here

Again, there will be a new revision shortly and this will be unstickied.

    :)
