Hi, I start a new job on the 1st September. I'll be getting paid monthly. I'm on job seekers allowance at the moment. Im wondering do I sign off from the dole before I start working? If I do sign off, im left without money for a month though.

The age ole dilemma, get a loan of friends/family to tide you over until first wage, thats what I've done in the past, wages should be weekly like they were up until the last 15 years or so though.

You could ask for your first months wages to be broken up into a smaller time frame than a month to help with your cash flow and then switch back to monthly after that.

    No harm in asking.

Just keep claiming until it's cut off. You'll receive a letter demanding repayment of the overpayment. Treat it as a "loan" and pay it back with your first months wages.

MOD-NOTE: This is fraud. Don't do it. And please do not suggest illegal actions here.

I very much doubt that a company which runs monthly payroll would do that.

More possible is an advance on your first month's salary - but do remember that means you won't have much to live on in the 2nd month either. And it is admitting to your new employer that you're flat broke.

A loan from family or a credit union is a more likely solution.

Thanks for the advice. I was hoping for an alternative to getting myself into debt before my first payday. I don't really want to get a letter from my new employer either for that reason.

Im sure there has been others in the same situation that figured something out?

Ask at the dole office if they can give you a crisis loan until you get paid.

Unfortunately, you probably WILL get into a small amount of debt.

Figure out exactly how much money you'll need for that month, keeping it to minimums (so you don't borrow too much and be broke on the second month too). Ask family or friends (easiest way) for a loan. If you can't do that, ask your community welfare officer for a supplementary payment or exceptional needs payment.

    Good luck :)
