    Hi

I've just taken up cycling and and I'm wondering what footwear should I buy? I just have a mountain bike and do 20-30k once or twice a week mainly on the road and have been wearing a pair of Aldi trainers :-( Is it just standard trainers I should be wearing? I'm not keen on spending huge money as I can drop hobbies very quickly...

You really need something with a very stiff sole.

If you can get to a local Lidl some still have mountain bike shoes for €25, seems like a fairly stiff sole in them. You would need MTB pedals and cleats, you can get those from Chain Reaction Cycles or Wiggle for around €20-25 for the set.

I wore standard trainers for years without any trouble when I just went for spins on my mountain bike. Only thing is that air vents on running shoes may make your toes colder on a windy or cold day.

If you find yourself upgrading to a road bike in a few years, by all means go for cycling shoes so you can clip into the pedals - you'll get more power into every stroke.
