Would you need a drill to put a towel rail into plasterboard? Or are there screws that can be turned with ascrewdriver?

all screws can be turned with a screwdriver - should be no trouble screwing into plasterboard ......... whether it will hold or not is a different matter

What's behind the plasterboard? partition wall? block/brick wall?

You don't want to screw a towel rail into plaster board if you can avoid it, you want to screw the towel rail into what's behind the plasterboard.

Don't know correct word it is hollow inside. I would have to screw to wood joists?

Yea best try find the wooden studs (joist as u called them). How old is the wall? If it's a new is build you might be able to see the nails/screws securing the plaster board. Just put a wood screw into the stud, will not come out.

There are plaster board fittings to go into the plaster board a and not the stud but your relying on cardboard and chalk to hold up your towel rail.

Depending on the length of the towel rail you may have to use both approaches, a different one for each end.

Yea that's new in building terms.

Look at the wall, top to bottom, you might see a hand full of little marks in the plaster where the nails are. They should be 16 inches apart. Also check the skirting you might be able to spot where nails/screws have been filled over.

Is there a radiator on the wall? look down behind it how it's fixed to the wall.

Some people will find these by tapping the wall, when you get a solid sound your over the stud, but it's very subtle the change, there's also electronic stud finders.

If you get a small/strong magnet it should stick to the nails/screws that hold the plasterboard to the stud, so move it around till you find it sticking, then mark the position....
