Thought this was funny as I'll admit I'm obsessed with my fitbit!! :P Think the monthly subscription is a bit much if you're shelling out for the collar though?!

With smart watches struggling to take hold among consumers amid concerns they don’t prove their usefulness and Google’s smart glasses still in the beta phase come reports that a UK-based company called PetPace has launched the world’s first smart dog collar. Among the things the collar purports to do is inform the owner how the dog is feeling. Like smart watches, these smart dog collars will calorie count and monitor the heart rate only in their case they’ll do it for the dog. The gizmo even promises to build a profile that allows for a comparison to other similar canines and felines.

Naturally, veterinarians are supportive of the product because it will help increase traffic at their places of business. As you were, the gadgets will help early diagnose potential health issues with the pets. The tiny transducers & sensors inside the device will also monitor the pet’s body temperature.

“This is a product that is going to revolutionize veterinary medicine, as well as enhancing a pet owner’s ability to recognize that their pet is becoming ill before they start showing physical signs,” said Dr. Teresa Lightfoot, director of BluePearl Science, who conducted clinical trials of the collar. “The ability to have real-time, continuous access to pets’ vitals is undoubtedly going to save pets’ lives.”

The devices will also have the option to text or e-mail both the owner and vet of any health anomalies that are detected. The algorithm inside the device will be able to compare current readings with the pet’s health history and breed specific metrics.

It is the holistic picture of health provided by the collar that PetPace’s chief veterinary scientist claims amounts to the dog owner being told how the dog feels. It should be noted that the device is already on sale in the United States and retails for $150. It will go on sale in the UK in 2015. In addition, it does require a monthly subscription fee. There’s no word yet as to whether use of such a device will contribute to a lower pet health insurance policy for those people that indulge in such boutique insurance policies. PetPace cautions that any interpretation of the data output should be left to veterinarians as opposed to dog owners.
