4G in Mayo

Anyone know anything about 4g or have 4g on a smartphone in mayo?

Have inquired with my providers but they have no current plans to introduce 4G in mayo.
I know most places can't even get 3G but there's no reason why the bigger towns can't get 4G. We seem to be lightyears behind counties in the East.

I felt it should have been a bigger issue during the last election and more pressure should be on politicians to help fast track it.

You can check their coverage map

    Vodafone - http://www.vodafone.ie/coverage/
Almost no coverage. Tiny bit crossing the border with Galway near Ballinrobe.

    Three - http://www.three.ie/explore/coverage-checker/
No coverage at all in Mayo.

    Meteor - http://www.meteor.ie/internet-coverage/
Coverage in the south of the county including Ballinrobe, Claremorris and Ballyhaunis
Parts to the west in Louisburgh and Clare Island.

Of course where they claim they have coverage and where you can connect to it are two different things but it gives you an idea of the areas covered. Paying a premium to get a 4G data plan in the likes of Westport or Castlebar doesn't really make sense right now but will when they expand their coverage further.

I'm lucky enough to have efiber powered wifi at work and home and get 3G most of the time I'm out around town so the lack of 4G isn't a huge deal for me.

4G on three is now available around Castlebar for anyone who's interested.

I've been getting really terrible 4g speeds lately. Check this out in contrast to my previous results quoted above from a few months back.

Can't believe we're going backwards on this. It's possible thought that 3 have deliberately redistricted me as I'm only on the 20 euro 30 day free internet pay-as-you-go deal. So are ppl on bill pay who pay for 4g getting similar results in the Castlebar area? My mobile shows I'm on the LTE signal. 3g speed is similarly much reduced :/.

Hope this is not a permanent result of 3 and 02 coming together.

I'm surprised that you're surprised. It was always going to be fastest at launch, with only downward pressure on speeds as more users are added. We saw the same thing with 3G; why would 4G be different?

It's possible that you'll see an uptick in speeds if and when 3 sort themselves out post-takeover, but the pressure on speeds will always be relentlessly downward.

I have recently been upgraded to 4G for free with vodafone (billpay since 1996) I had upgraded my phone about 4 months ago but didn't change my tariff to 4G (would cost extra €15 a month) 4G very good where you can get it, still not available in my town even though it says it is on the map  Actually vodafone 4G coverage is quite poor in Mayo as far as I can see. I also have a 3G dongle for internet (since 2006) The 3G speeds have vastly improved in the last 6 months or so, consistently so.

I'm getting over 20 meg download and upload in Ballina on Vodafone.
It's actually better than my efibre only drawback is I don't have a lot of data usage in my tarrif

On the 3 network I take it ? It's not showing up on their coverage map in Westport. Or is it Vodafone?

Eircom has 4G up and running around Ballina for at least a few weeks.

Not sure exactly when as I only bother to turn on 4G a while after 3G seemed upgraded and I guessed there might be a link.
