"Over the past few months we’ve been running tests taking into account whether sites use secure, encrypted connections as a signal in our search ranking algorithms. We’ve seen positive results, so we’re starting to use HTTPS as a ranking signal. For now it's only a very lightweight signal—affecting fewer than 1 per cent of global queries, and carrying less weight than other signals such as high-quality content — while we give webmasters time to switch to HTTPS. But over time, we may decide to strengthen it, because we’d like to encourage all website owners to switch from HTTP to HTTPS to keep everyone safe on the web."

Bit unfair to be honest. Grand for any site taking details etc where its of value but no need for brochureware type sites - will just decrease their ranking potentially

No it won't (decrease their ranking). The problem with TLS and ranking is having two sites with the same stuff, one TLS and one in the clear. Google does not like copycatery. But if you force your user to https:// all the time, the googlebots just see one copy. And because it is secure they seem to take its contents more seriously.

People have a right to privacy. Especially with WiFi all over the place. It doesn't matter if somebody is looking at car sites or shopping for tomatoes. It is nobody's business to snoop. It also reduces the risk of a man in the middle attack if it comes to entering your payment card details etc ..... because all cookies will be https.
