Receiving Italian satellite channels in Ireland

    Hi All,

Apologies in advance if this is a stupid question!

Is it possible to receive Italian channels here in Ireland? I have a satellite setup that I receive freesat channels from (I think) as well as saorview. Is it possible to tune the received to another satellite to get channels such as RAI 1, RAI 2, MediaSat etc.?

I have already tried to tune with Hotbird 13o following the advice of a thread but while I can see the channel listing after a scan, when I try and select a channel the result is 'no signal'.

Does anyone have any ideas? I'm relatively new to all of this so apologies if I am missing anything glaringly obvious! :)

    Thanks in advance!

As the name implies, Hotbird is at 13 degrees East. This means the dish needs to point to a different part of the sky compared to the normal 28 degrees used by UK channels. In some cases it may be possible to fit an adaptor arm and second LNB to the front of the dish. Another option is to fit a second dish for 13°. Either way it's best to consult a good satellite installer with experience of foreign satellite systems.

What is the make and model of your satellite receiver?

Thanks Gerry, I was hoping it would be a simpler job but that doesn't sound too difficult either! :)

Cush I'm not actually sure, it was a combo box I got from lidl about 2 years ago or so.

The basic setup is an old Sky dish; I'm in an apartment so not sure how possible it will be to add additional kit to the dish but I might get someone to have a look at it.

    Thanks for the replies!

The Lidl receiver should be OK provided it has DiSEqC switching built in which would allow you to auto switch between the 2 satellites with the correct dish setup. Two dishes might be difficult in an apartment so a single dish with 2 LNBs might be the best solution. You may have to upgrade the dish. A professional installer would be recommended.

Plenty of Italian stuff on 13 East. Most of RAI's channels (though some shows are scrambled on the odd occasion due to rights issues e.g. F1 racing), Mediaset's main stations are also there (Rete 4, Canal 5, Italia 1 etc.) along with a few Italian versions of channels that are branded in a number of countries e.g. DMAX, QVC, Real Time (which also has a secondary English audio track) etc. as well as a slew of low budget channels, shopping outlets and so on. All of them except Supertennis however are in SD only that I can remember. If you want the HD versions of the main channels from RAI & Mediaset you could go down the Tivu Sat route, but it requires an Italian social security number to purchase from an official outlet unless you go down a grey third-party route which will likely be more expensive. Also if you were able to get access to a Swiss SATACCESS card, you'd also get RSI's (Swiss Italian language PSB) stations as well.
