Source 2 launched?

Would be surprising if they released it to such little fanfare, but it's about time we actually see something of the engine (if it is true). A MOBA isn't exactly where i'd have thought we'd see it first though.

I didn't even realise DOTA was in the Source engine.

DOTA's one of the biggest games in the world and is played across multiple nations with varying degrees of tech and infrastructure, can't think of a better way to test a new engine :D

This soft launch thing (if it is indeed a thing) is quite clever. Valve knows that hype is a potential killer of any game. If something new just appears with no fanfare you get to play strong PR cards along the lines of "we're still in the testing/beta phase" if/when people bitch and moan about something.

That won't stop the but-hurt when HL3 does eventually reappear :p

I've been doing a bit of reading on this and apparently one of the benefits is that they have broken the hard-limit on the number of available hat combinations

Maybe some bigger announcment at Gamescom perhaps. But yeah I've downloaded the alpha tools and there's plenty of source 2 references. Also, the map editing is soooo much easier. It's amazingly powerful

Maybe some bigger announcment at Gamescom perhaps.
This is Valve; we will be given cryptic messages in various Steam games for a month all pointing us towards a web site. The website will have a countdown that can be sped up by the number of times you do the new Conga taunt in TF2. In 13.4s after this messages goes out the timer goes to zero as the whole world enters TF2 and do the conga.

This then reveals step 1 of the release of the new source engine with the other steps promised to follow shortly and will be released every day in cute TF2 style videos before they finally announce that yes, number three is coming. The few people who're still alive from the collective heart attack among all the nerds at the official announcement of HF3 live long enough to see TF3 is the new game they meant and they all kill themselves in disappointment instead... And so this is how the world ended and the day the computers stopped working as all the world's nerds are now dead.

Or so I was told around the campfire by my old auntie :P

So is the fact that Valve haven't commented on these rumours good, bad or just they're too busy laughing at everyone getting worked up over this?

Here is a decent video explainer that tries to piece together the development of Source 2 to date.

They never really comment on rumors / speculation. But all the same this is the real deal.
