I'm 20 going 21 this year, hoping to go to college. Been on social welfare the last full year, without any luck in getting a job. Looking to go back to college this year, if all goes right and I get a course. I meet all the requirements for BTEA except for the age rule. I turn 21 on the 23rd September, most courses start a week before that. I've rang them, asked social welfare directly and everything and they tell me they dont know if i'd be entitled to it or not. Do they ever make any exceptions?

Also a big question, on the website it says that if you're between the age of 18 - 20 and are out of form education for two years and meet the other requirements you'll be entitled to btea. It doesnt specify if the years have to be consecutive? Because I've been out of formal education 2 years, but it hasnt been consecutive. I did a course in 2012/2013 but havent done one this year or the year of 2011/2012. Can anyone clarify this please?

For the sake of one week I think that Social Welfare could be lenient. Have you checked the start date of the courses that you applied to?

i've searched around and i am not getting any solid dates. The fact I dont yet have a course isnt helping matters, offers are on the 18th of August! I would hope they would turn a blind eye, especially cause there musn't be that many cases like this, but idk... they're pretty strict, and the requirements are there for a reason... :\

If you call the individual colleges for courses that you're hoping to get then they should be able to give you the start dates.

You could also call the BTEA Head Office (071 967 2616), they might be the best people to answer your question.

Have you applied to SUSI also?

I will give them a call thanks, however the number I was given by citizen's information seems to be different - 01 7043000

I did apply for Susi, but next year I might not be entitled to what I would be now, as my dad will hopefully be starting work again if all goes well, in October. That will at least cut my maintenance grant by half if not more (or all of it, dont know yet). Not to mention last time I did my plc, I recieved my grant in June. My course finished in May :s. Only reason I didnt have to drop out was cause my sister lent me the rest but if its that late this year i wont be as lucky.
