Trading in cars

I have a bee in my bonnet about dealers, and I was wondering if anybody knows of anybody who is fair with regards to trade ins.

I have a Lexus is220d (08) and I went to the Lexus garage for an 07 Audi tt that they had. Mine is the exec model, and more expensive than the quoted tt to buy new, and yet he wanted my car + 6k trade in for the tt... This was through the Lexus garage in Blackrock - the person who I thought would give me the fairest price on it (especially since a '10 is220 exec was sold by them for 22k this week).

I get that dealers have to make money from this, but are there any that are actually fair on these kind of things?

Best to sell it privately and get the best price that way

What were you expecting; the TT plus money your way? Almost certainly not going to happen anywhere.

If you feel that they are taking the piss then go somewhere else. Or better still sell your car privately and you will be in the best position to buy whatever you want.

No, I never said that; I was willing to pay for the trade in, but 6k is ridiculous. Of course I will go elsewhere, my issue is when people have more money than sense and will trust the integrity of a 'reputable' dealer. Though my car is a Lexus, a Lexus dealer offered me the lowest price and that too I think is ridiculous. I hate the way these dealers treat consumers... I was thinking of the tt or the finance package they have on the new IS - but that isn't going to happen now!

Is it the blue 2.0 Tfsi auto TT?

If so, I test drove it already.

    Dont buy the automatic TT!

Little benefit moaning about prices here I'd have thought.

You will never benefit from trading down with a dealer. The price you were quoted I'd imagine was the dealer's roundabout way of telling you they were not interested.

    ^^
    This exactly..
For whatever reason they didn't want to take your car against it and just didn't want to say no..

I would have thought he would have been much interested in a deal. Would a 2008 IS220d not be a LOT easier for him to shift that a petrol TT on the old tax system? I would have though you'd be doing him a favor OP!

Someone in the market for a TT is aware of how much it costs to tax, they are a fairly low volume desirable car too whereas the is220d is not all that sought after like a similar 3 Series or A4 diesel. Even on the co2 system they were not that cheap to tax.

The Lexus dealer could also have a number of similar IS220ds on his forecourt for sale and simply didn't want another.

The mere presence of the TT may attract some random punters onto the lot, another IS won't.

Sell your toyota privately then with a hand full of cash beat down dealer forecourt price

A fair question. The Lexus would be more reliable and practical. However, the diesel engine in the second generation Lexus IS was not rated very highly when the car was in production - the equivalent engines from BMW, Audi, and Mercedes were rated better for fuel economy, emissions, and power. The fact that the third generation Lexus IS does not include a diesel engine option and the fact that Toyota is putting BMW diesel engines into certain Toyota (but not Lexus) models sold in Europe say a lot.

The TT would be the seen as the more desirable car and easier to move on even though it's a two door car, which is a segment of the car market that's on the decline these days. The second generation TT is more reliable than the first generation TT, which was a bit of a dog for reliability.

    You're comparing apples and oranges.

Cars depreciate at different rates and can have widely differing used values.

Any dealer will be lucky to make up to 1k on any such a car.

This is after a legit dealer pays all his business costs, Valeting, Servicing, VAT, Corporation Tax, Commercial Rates, Salaries, Employers PRSI, Warranty, Water charges, Refuse, Electricity, Phone, rental / purchase of premises, maintenance of premises, etc. etc. etc. etc.

Also he might sell the car in a few weeks, or he might not sell it for a year while it sits in his yard tieing up capital and depreciating.

Crooks/liars can make money selling cars, legit dealers who pay all their dues, not so much.

Agreed. A car dealer assesses a trade-in (or prospective trade-in) in terms of whether he can find a buyer for the car (quickly). Clearly, a saloon might have more appeal than, say, a coupe, if you look at it in terms of the number of potential buyers. However, as soon you start to factor in make, model, spec, age, and mileage, things can become murky.

To be honest, given he is a Lexus dealer, the car has a FSH from Lexus, that he would have offered a better price. My main issue was a Lexus dealer offering me the lowest price of all the dealers I spoke to!

And the Toyota comment is ridiculous! For one, Toyota's are good cars; why is the luxury brand of it seen as a bad thing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

He offered you the lowest price because that is what he reckoned it was worth to him in order to sell it on again. As I said earlier if the Lexus dealer has a number of similar cars to yours for sale then last thing he probably wants is another one on his forecourt. Rather than tell you no outright he told you this in a roundabout way. Also a TT (petrol or diesel) is more desirable than an IS220D, the dealer is probably confident that he can get more money for it by not taking your IS220D as part trade-in.

I really think people take it too personally when a dealer offers then a low trade-in value, just move on to another dealer who offers a better deal.

How many other similar IS's does he have in stock or due in to stock? That'll impact on whether he wants your car also!
