Public IP on Vodafone 3G?

Is it possible to access a box (NVR) located behind a VF 3G dongle?

I had a 3Ireland dongle and i was told it was definitely not possible due to double NAT'ing or something like that in the 3 network setup.

Now there's a VF dongle on-site and customer support said it should be fine once on hs.vodafone.ie but I cant seem to get any ports open on the router and I'm wondering if it's even possible before I start to dig deeper.

02 have a specific APN for this type of thing but there's no o2 coverage at the location.

    The setup is as follows:
    3G dongle into TP-Link 3220 router.

Two things. Firstly, you need to be sure you're getting assigned a public ip just for you, not double NAT like most mobile networks.

Secondly, port forwards can work, but the connection probably won't be pinned up, so it will drop when idle. That means something local will have to send data out to wake it before you can access it remotely. You'll also need to run dynamic dns of course.

    Thanks for the reply.

Yeah thats why I'm asking on here. The VF tech support guy seemed to think it was a proper public IP I was getting and not double NAT but I have my suspicions as I haven't had to pay any extra or use a different APN unlike if I wanted this with o2.

Does anyone know what the arcitecture of VF's netowrk id like? Is there any way of telling from the IP I'm getting 213.233.xxx.xxx how "public" it is?

Run the speedtest.net app, it'll read both internal ip and external ip if its CGN(carrier grade nat).

IE I'm on 178.x.x.x with an internal 10.x.x.x address.

The site is remote to me but I do remember when I was there the TP-Link was showing an IP of 10.68.x.x on the 3G page and ipchicken.com was telling me the external IP was 213.233.x.x

I wasn't sure what the 10.68 was indicating. Does this mean I cant access this router/network remotely?

Just to clarify I cant remotely log-in to a pc behind the router using teamviewer etc but the cctv operators say their box (Hikvision NVR) needs to be directly reachable from outside so it's own "app" can access the footage and receive alarms from the box etc.

PS the "professional" cctv guys havent a clue......

Cctv lads won't have a monkeys.

    10. is private. You're on cgn in that case.

Teamviewer uses relaying to defeat NAT issues. It makes the connection an outbound one so its not an issue but that requires a "man in the middle" server.

Spoke with someone else in VF and now they say it's not achievable and directed me to a preferred solutions provider.

Thanks for the help, as I suspected I got the wrong info from VF the first day.
