The Department has started a public consultation process on Beef Producer Organisations.

    http://www.agriculture.gov.ie/press/pressreleases/2014/august/title,77292,en.html

Has anyone any opinions on how these might work or how they would like to see them formed.

What do you think the objectives should be?

What rules and requirements do you think members should adhere to?

Thanks for posting. I haven't read all the attached documents yet.

A lot of work in setting up a producer group l would imagine. All involved parties would want to be hands on and fully committed and everything above board.

I could see the majority wanting to be part of one with the expectation of receiving better price for their beef, but not willing to put in any work!!!

Simon coveney is a great man for kicking the can down the road. Suckler/beef farmers need another consultation process like a hole in the head.
We already adhere to endless rules and requirements and get feck all reward for it. Farmers were told that if they followed QA guidelines it would reward them for producing in-spec cattle. Look how that turned out.
Coveney would be better off sorting out the labelling nonsense before he does anything else.

Is there anyone who is part of a lamb producer group?

Would they have any pointers for beef farmers thinking of starting up a producer group.

My lambs go through a group,
Loyalty is important....you supply the no. of lambs you say you're going to at the times (roughly) you say.
Ensure that the quality is good and you work to the specs that they require.
In other words, when the guys are negotiating the deal, they're offering an above average product

Really all your doing is procurement manager's job for factory, what are the benefit(s) for producers?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

I think this is an effort to get around new EU legislation. This legislation covers the balance of power between big and small organisations. Companiers with turnover exceeding 30 million I think if dealing with small suppliers on an adhoc basis now have to issue contracts if the supplier requests same.

Producer groups will sort this requirement for factory's and supermarkets. If we do not have producer groups, processors would have to issue contracts. If these contracts were on a take it or leave it basis processors and supermarktes would be leaving themselves libel for dominant market actions.

By using producer groups this will allow them not to have to take invidual farmer costs, or any farmer cost into account. This is not for farmers benifit rather it is a way of circumventing this legislation.
