How much are we talking about here?

I presume its a private sale?

People are wary of dodgy bank drafts these days. Im not sure that Id accept one tbh. Cash lodged into a bank account with both of you present is the safest way for a seller to accept payment.

You could accompany the buyer to a bank and get a draft. Otherwise I would't accept a bank draft as they are open to being forgeries.

You could also ask the seller to meet you at a bank and get the teller to count and verify the cash in front of them.

Really depends on the amount involved though. There is no way I would turn up with thousands in cash on me.

Agree to do it, but complete the handover in either a bank or a Garda station.

I have met the seller x2..test driven the car with him.. He drove the car to my local garage, where my usual mechanic checked the car out & also took it for a test drive..
I have also been on phone to him a few times..
He seems like a normal, decent bloke..

Saying that..u cant be too vigilant..
Where would be best place to pay: local garage or at my house..?!
I have no car at mo, so have to bike it or borrow family's car!!

    This.

Make sure the Guards are aware of the transaction and you have all the relevant details. Name, address etc.

If everything is above board, the seller should have no problem doing it.

If he protests or is against it for any reason, walk. This is your cash you are handing over and it should be done on your terms.

    Hey! Thanks for the feedback..
I have called the Garda station & arranged to meet the seller there & transfer the cash..
He had no problem with it at all...
    So, should be all good..

I recently faced the same dilemma for a larger sum. In my case I got the seller to agree to a draft by sending on a photo prior to sale (opposite end of country) which enabled the seller to contact the bank to verify that the draft was genuine - long series of numbers can be used to authenticate with the issuing bank. I was definitely not comfortable carrying a large sum of cash around en route to sale.

Buy a bank draft. Inform bank to expect a call from the seller verifying the details of the draft.

A final check before cash handover I would do is ask to see some photographic ID and verify that this matches with the name on the VLC.
