Depression getting worse - what to do?

I've been suffering from depression for the last few years, and I've been on medication and it was working well until around last September or so. Since then, I've been all over the place mentally. I've started self harming again, and I'm giving up on everything that has given me any sort of joy. It just feels like I'm never going to get better. I throw pills down my throat every day hoping that they'll make me better, but I just feel worse and worse.

I'm petrified to tell my family that I've gone back to self harm. My mother always looked down on me for doing it, and she's always made me feel bad for even having those thoughts. I have no idea what to do anymore. Going to see a professional counsellor isn't really an option, because I'm on a medical card and am unemployed.

I'm at the end of my tether with this, and I have no idea if I'm going to even make it through the next few weeks. It's just getting worse and I can't see it changing any time soon.

    Hi OP,

I would imagine that there was a point where you were seeing a GP or counsellor who prescribed your medication to you - while you say that it "just feels like I'm never going to get better", there was obviously a time where your medication was working well for you, and now you really need to revisit your GP or counsellor and tell them what you are going through so that they can adjust your medication accordingly. Please take this step as soon as possible - get the financial support that you need from your family if necessary.

In the meantime, our Information for Distressed Posters" thread contains links to the appropriate support organisations - someone to talk to about all of this is at the end of a telephone line, should you take the step to reach out to them.

The fact that you say "I have no idea if I'm going to even make it through the next few weeks" concerns me greatly. As such, I've taken the liberty of directing turn2me.org towards this thread - they are an online mental health organisation who have a representative here on Boards who lends their expertise when necessary - and hopefully they will be in touch with you soon regarding what you are going though, and can point you in the right direction as to what services are available to you.

With that, I'm going to close your thread for now OP, because with the best will in the world, posters can not understand what you are going through right now. But please know that the wheels have been set in motion, and you should be receiving a PM shortly as to the steps to take next.

    Regards,
    Mike

    Hello randomusernamehere,

My name is Eoin O'Shea and I work for an online mental health organisation called Turn2me (based in Dublin).

I'm contacting you today as part of an arrangement between Boards.ie and Turn2me whereby we offer support to members of Boards who may be experiencing significant distress.

Firstly, let me say that I am very sorry to hear of the depression you are going through. As well as this being long-term, it really sounds as though the past few months have left you wondering about the future and feeling quite hopeless.

As part of our arrangement with Boards.ie, I would like to inquire as to whether or not you might be interested in availing of free online counselling sessions with Turn2me. We offer these to members of the general public - free of charge or any obligation - having been provided with funding to do so by the HSE.

Needless to say, there is no obligation on you to avail of this offer. However, you mentioned not being able to afford private counselling. If you think that you might benefit from some counselling sessions offered online through our website, all you need to do is email us at: engage@turn2me.org and our staff can progress arrangements from there.

Whatever you decide, we at Turn2me wish you the very best in coping with what must be an incredibly difficult experience at the moment.

All the very best to you,

    Eoin
