How Do Clampers, Gardai and Traffic Wardens check car registrations for ParkingTag.ie Payments?

I've never seen them in action.
Is it an application that requires WiFi or just 3g/4g on a smartphone ..... or what?

What happens if the technology is down?

How much grace do you get?
You can't simply add on time when you are near the expiry time (any overlap is is a loss to the user)

They have handheld devices with some kind of network link, probably involves a mobile phone SIM so the device has a data link back to the database of who has paid for parking. The original scheme involved a barcode on a sticker on the windscreen which they used to scan, nowadays it's based solely on the registration number.

Dun Laoghaire gives you 15 minutes grace before and after. Nowadays if you phone to topup and you have time remaining, the automated voice will tell you that you have 'nn' minutes remaining, previously there was no way of knowing if your time had expired or not unless you took the text reminder option.

This is no longer an option ..... it may appear as an option on the website, but you get the 20c reminder whether you want it or not.

Only if you pay by text message. I only ever pay by phoning and pressing buttons. I typically park for short periods so am not prepared to pay the 20c for an SMS reminder.
