Clutch Noise

When I have the car in neutral there is an unusual noise and it goes away when the clutch is pressed down. I have looked on the net and have had a mechanic listen to it and they all point to bearing/s.

I got a second hand gearbox and a new clutch fitted a year or so ago. Should any bearings go already?

First thought would be the release bearing which is only ONE replaceable bearing, and it would most people would replace it when they put in a new clutch.

So he should have done it when he put in the new clutch?

Found the receipt and its two years ago and says new clutch kit

    What type of car OP?
Could it be a dual mass flywheel?

I can't be 100% sure as I've only put in a few clutches but to me clutch kit includes the clutch release bearing. Just phone a motor factor ask for a clutch kit for you car and ask whats in it.

Is it the clutch pedal or the actual clutch? If its the pedal? Does it sound like a creaky or screechy sound? Might need a bit of oil but sometimes not pressing down clutch far enough can cause a noise if that's what it sounds like. Its a very normal thing to happen its happened to me a few times but sometimes it down to the way you pressing in the clutch. If not doing so fully can cause a noise.

Does it make noise when you are changing gears? Timing belt issue? It might just need to be replaced, it often happens in older cars can be a noisy clutch.

The pedal did squeak when pressed down, but that's gone a while.

Its like something spinning on its own and when push in the clutch it stops and sounds like its pushed against something, hard to describe.

No noise or issues changing gears(sometimes on third, but think im more paranoid after gearbox going),timing belt done a few years ago

I think there is meant to be some kind of a ball or something in between the pedal and something else could it be an issue with that? It was over a year ago I had that fixed and had a car service and this year and its fine but does get bouts of the squeaky sound when pressing in clutch sometimes but not near as much now.

In my experience you hear the noise of a bad release bearing with the engine running as you start to press the clutch and the clutch starts to disengage. In the worst cases this can be an horrific noise of screeching parts because your release bearing is damaging the clutch release mechanism. The release bearing is there to allow pressure to be applied to the clutch mechanism from a shaft that is running at a different speed to the clutch, so if the release bearing isn't fully functional you have a metal on metal grinding sound. A worn release bearing may just give a hint that its not working well by making odd noises whenever the ball bearings aren't moving at the same speed as the main drive shaft, thats no big deal its the metal on metal noise that is terminal.

Could be a ball bearing issue as well. I'd get get it checked out again. They have to look at the under body to see whats really happening.
