3 foot putts

I've been practicing these a good bit lately and I've noticed a huge difference in confidence over them in a round now too.

I've been doing that little drill whereby I just drop 6 balls around the hole the lenght of a putter from the hole in a circle.

I got 53 in a row today before lipping one out.

Anybody else try this and if so what's your record.

I'd imagine some lads can get about 100 on the bounce

Sounds like a great drill. I doubt I've made many more than three in a row from this distance in recent weeks :(

Some guy on youtube goes for a string of 4ft putts. He's pretty good. Worth a watch.

I've never tried for a record but when I do practice putting (less now than in the summer), I'd finish with 10 of them.

When you scatter 6 balls around the hole 3 foot out you need to have a little walk after every 10 or so as the lower back gets a bit tight and also to keep concentration

I was a horrendous putter last year, confidence was in tatters.

Bought a mat over winter and I practice short putts as many evenings as I can now. Putting mat is in the kitchen and I try to throw it down when the little ones are in bed most nights.

    Completely changed my putting.
I still wouldn't consider myself a great putter... Just yet ;)
But confidence is on the up :)
In fact, a bit of carelessness/ overconfidence has crept in, if I roll one 3 foot short/past, sometimes I'll walk up and hit it by barely breaking stride.... That has cost me one or two over the last few rounds and I'll need to stop that.
But last year I was missing 4 or 5 a round. Pure fear.

I'll set myself a target whenever I'm on the mat, generally around 40-50.
I take the first from 2ft, then 3ft, 4ft and back in again.
It's way easier than on the green but it's great for confidence and has helped my long putts as much as your short ones.
No more thoughts of "oh no, here's a 3 putt coming up" when I'm standing over a 20 footer.

Saying that..., had 3 3putts last weekend :(

I do that 3 foot drill before every single round I play, place a ball north, south, east and west of the hole.

Cant do that around the hole thing, I get dizzy and sick when I move from one ball to the next ;)

Milltown have a couple of tony cups, just bigger than a ball for you to practice your short putts before you go out, I think its a great idea.

    Very good.
I'd be afraid of shattering confidence missing them though

Key is to go clockwise on one rotation, then anticlockwise on the next.

I've eliminated falling down on the putting green from my game thanks to that.

I do something similar, I think everyone does don't they :D

Someone mentioned above though, if I do loads my back get's absolutely wrecked. I normally drop three balls at X feet and stand up and away after every putt, then back down. I've a dodgy back and nothing wrecks it more then excessive putting practice.

I normally go onto the putting green and with two balls go through the holes 1-6( or whatever it is), so I've a variety of breaks and lines and distance to work with. Goal is to two putt them all max.

Then I finish up with a few sets of 3ft, 6ft and 10ft putts that I know are dead straight. This is just to make sure I'm aligning correctly and not doing anything funky with my feet or body.

Then I go out, and four hours later want to smash my putter over my knee.

I must try this. My putting has been awful of late, especially the short ones. The long ones aren't good either, but I've missed a lot of putts inside 5 feet lately and I don't know whether it's my stroke or the fact that I probably don't practice enough.

I'm going to spend an hour on the putting green tomorrow evening, followed by an hour chipping before going out for 9 holes and will repeat that every time I go up there.

Useless at them. Worst I've seen.

Costs me 2-3 shots a round.

The days I get these tend to be my best on a course.

very sad in a way. As I'd be in great positions on hole.

For a while was practicing on matt . 120 in a row from 4-5 feet.

worked and going back to that, as a couple of events in September.

Slight improvement with fat grip. Only slight. Still pull them.

Was struggling with these recently and one change I made was to make sure I didn't look up until I heard the ball hit the cup (or not :D )....lifting head to see result can cause these pull apparently

It's short, medium and a long out for me with my eyes closed, all I want is a feel for speed and distance

Think the best drill is start at 3 foot with 1 ball and keep going back on the same line untill you miss one it feels like you are working on pace and line. best i've done is 7 putts.
