Rear Cassette not changing down

    Lads

    Shimano 105's
The lever doesn't respond to the change down, or, if it does if take a few minutes and then cluncks down. So effectively its stuck in the top ring or the second ring. When gears eventually respond they have no problem clicking back up again. Front gears are fine.

Presume a basic fix in my LBS or should I try fixing it myself?

    Cheers Bazermc

Did the rear derailleur get a knock?
Make sure it isn't bent first before any adjustments are made.

Cheers. Is that normal wear and tear? Bike has done about 3500km since new.

    New cables and housing.

Failing that, you could try greasing the cable a little, and running the housing up and down the cable, as a bit of a 'scrubber', cleaning the inside of the housing with the cable itself. Clean cable between scrubs. But...grease often picks up and holds onto dirt and grit...so a new set of cables, and housing, is a good place to start.

Sounds like dirt in the spring to me, thorough clean as per brownian's post should resolve, failing that WD-40 and manually manipulate down, change up, change down, manually manipulate down, rinse repeat... until it pops down by itself.

and clean your bike after rides in future, or at least when you get in from a weekend ride.

Due to similar issues with 105 5700 gears not changing down very well and having read this thread, I changed the cable inner and outers on the rear deraileur last night. The difference is extraordinary. Gears changing up and down now much crisper and almost no resistance in the lever.
Full shimano cable kit from wiggle for about €13. Not too many "upgrades" for that price that have that much effect!:D

Bike all fixed. Cables were worn. Bike as good as new now, except for me. I am getting older fatter and slower.
