Have you been doing much running? Don't be concerned, it's a great atmosphere and a lovely route so just get stuck in and enjoy it.

I'm all signed up and have my number but unfortunately it clashes with another race that I want to do so I'll have to give it a miss. Pity as I would have liked to do the whole series.

    Best of luck OP :)

I'm signed up. In theory it should be easier than last year, as according to the map they have taken out Military Hill and the S bends.

Why have they changed the route. Not mad about the idea of leaving the park and running along the side of the road outside.

That was my least favourite part of the HM last year TBH.

No existing thread for this year but I think it's useful to read the thread from last year, (even of the course has changed a bit this year) especially the race reports which begin at the bottom of page 6.

There were no pacemakers in this any other year by the looks of it.

    I don't suppose that's changed this year??

    Looking forward to this one

Thanks folks, did the Irish runner 5 mile, just did Bay10km today and now have 10 miler (plus the half marathon if things go to plan) . Will read up on last years thread. Trying to follow a plan alright but as you know you can't always meet it, so sometimes I feel I'm not doing enough but sur will stick at it.

I am in a similar boat, this will be my first time running in an organised race of any kind. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!

This will be my first 10 miler! I started running in January and did a few 5ks early in the year. Have managed the Irish Runner 5 mile and the Fingal 10k so my aim is to complete the whole series! I'm on week 8 of the Hal Higdon half-marathon plan and so far, so good (fingers crossed I stay fit and healthy). I'm a bit concerned about this though as I was just away for the long weekend and will be at a festival the weekend before the race. Not exactly good race preparation as I know I will be eating rubbish and drinking too much!!! Still though, hopefully my training will stand to me and I'll manage to stumble through it on the day.

I just checked out the new route for this, prompted by the discussion here. Would I be right in saying they've removed the section along military road? I think this might make the course slightly easier.

Does anyone know the thinking behind this? I was wondering if it is in repsonse to last years half marathon which a lot of people (myself included) struggled in?

Have you noticed they've taken Military hill out of the Half Marathon too??

Is that along the area where the runner died in the HM last year? Perhaps something to do with that?

It's the only explanation I can think of. Makes no sense otherwise as closing a lane of the road is costly and adds nothing in terms of course design, except to make it easier perhaps for emergency vehicles to move quickly past iPod zombies. Pity. Seems like an overreaction but possibly insurance related.

We used the road outside in the half two years ago too, and we ran up Military in the five mile. I think it is more to do with breaking out of the park a bit, could be wrong

I wouldn't be hugely disappointed if military hill was taken out of the half - bloody thing nearly killed me in the 5 mile :P

Although I'll have a whole lot more leg work under my belt by the

I reckon it is to combat people's perceptions that it's a tough course and un-PBable and by removing the hills where possible means faster times are possible.
It certainly doesn't look too bad now with the last 2k being the only tough part of the course. Even with that there is a chance to keep things steady until we drop down from the Wellington monument and bank some seconds there before the final 2k slog up the Upper Glen Road to the finish.

Doubtful whether I'll make this now.

A quad muscle issue, which has been recurring since the Carlingford HM five months ago, decided to rear its ugly head again towards the end of my 16 mile LSR on Sunday morning.

Yesterday evening was my first trot out since. Even going at > 10 minute miles (about 7 in total) it was still flaring up again, so I've decided to rest completely for a bit, and see what it's like early in race week.

Possibly I've been trying too much too soon i.e. two 40 mile weeks in a row, after numerous weeks of little or no mileage bar actual racing, where my total rarely if ever went above 25.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 151 ✭✭Antwerp

Thanks for all the tips, managed to run 8.6 miles earlier today so aiming one more long run next week & week after with a few short runs inbetween - hopefully that will get me there. Mind you think my objective will be to run 10 mile as opposed to within a set time.

Does anyone know when they close off the race or do they keep it open as my fear is that it will be a very slow 10 miles? Was happy with my times for the two 5 miles I did a few months ago plus last Monday's bay10k but I reckon my 10 mile will be slow :(

Been wondering about Frank Duffy, after whom this race is called. Info? Stories?

Frank Duffy was a coach and was instrumental in restarting Civil Service AC after the war. I think they are the oldest club in Ireland. They set up a race in his honour many years ago and it was always a popular high calibre 10 miler on the racing calendar. There are a number of Civil Service AC members on the Dub Marathon Committee . More info probably on the Civil Service website

I think it could even have been 60 miles on his 60th birthday........Am I right in saying entry has closed? Tried to register yesterday and it seems to be game over. Cant remember them closing entries so early before.

I'm bummed, I wanted to run it but didn't realize they would close registration so early .... Are you guys aware of any other way to register?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 83 ✭✭Cooldog

Hi planning on doing this myself, just wondering if anyone has a garmin link or info on the course profile or if its a PB course.

Definitely not a pb course. First 5 miles are grand but second half you hit the hills.....

Course has changed now in that it brings you out of the park and around towards the Chapelizod gate, removing military hill and the s bends so possibly a bit more friendly and actually quick the whole way down Chesterfield avenue. The last couple of miles once you come back into the park will be tough though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,771 ✭✭✭jebuz

Ya I just look at the course (link here) and the fact we're not heading up the S-bends or down into the glen makes a big difference. I think it's a pretty good course overall with the only real tough section of note on mile 9, hopefully the fact you're almost finished will get you through it :)

I'm going out on a 17 miler shortly anyway! Missing 2 LSRs would screw up the plan too much!

Hope you enjoyed your 17 miler - sounds like a marathon in itself to me :)

In last year's HM, it was on the road (in the bus lane IIRC)

looking forward to this now but a little nervous. never run 10 mile before so at least i'll get a pb out of it :)

the weather's suppose to be dry as well, just hope the wind isn't to bad

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,601 ✭✭✭Wubble Wubble

For those who still haven't got their numbers, if they still haven't arrived by Saturday, the organisers will have a help desk on the Furze Road (beside the FM104 truck) which you should try and get to before 9:15 if required.

    Will there be pacers?

No pacers for the 10 mile.
There will be pacers at 10 minute intervals for the half (between 1:30 and 2hrs) and Full (between 3hrs and 5hrs).

Just wondering are there any hills/drags worth watching out for on the course.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,601 ✭✭✭Wubble Wubble

There's no particularly steep hills to worry about, especially as the organisers have taken the Military Hill out of this year's route. Pity I'm not in shape to go at it full tilt, or anything like it!

    Roughly it's like this....

    Miles 1 & 2 downhill
3 & 4 drag up North Road from the zoo to Castleknock Gate
5-8.5 downhill along Chesterfield Avenue again, exit the Park at Islandbridge gate...
8.5-10 come back into the Park at Chapelizod Gate, and it's a long slow drag from there to the finish on Furze Road.

    Best of luck.

Sounds Ok, how much if any will the drag when you come into the park at 8.75 miles slow you down, plan on trying to break 60 minutes, also ran the 10 miler here a few yeras ago and course was long by a good bit.
