Hi,I am looking at 2 passats tomorrow. Both 09, both around same mileage etc. Both highline. One is an 09 1.9 tdi 105ps and the other is a 2.0l tdi 110ps. I have a couple of questions:
Do all 09 passats come with bluemotion or not?
    Are they all 6 speed?
Is there much of a difference between the two engines?

I saw there was a similar thread to this but it is about a 2006 passat and i think they are slightly different

Go for the 1.9....the 2.0 one is problematic.

We do a lot golfs in from the uk...all 1.9, by choice.

the 2.0 is cheaper...is this why? what problems are involved?

Yep. The 1.9 are more in demand. Problems include but dont stop at
oil pump, injector and head problems.

How does the game change (if at all) - if the 1.9 is a BXE engine and the 2.0 is a common rail (I thought all 2.0s in 09 would have been common rail)

so should i avoid 2.0l at all costs even with 12 month warranty or not? is it v.common problems?

VW bought out a 2.0 tdi PD engine - and this DID give issues.

However - they did subsequently bring out a newer 2.0 tdi - which was a common rail engine. I was under the impression that the common rail version was more reliable - but im not sure if this is actually the case.

The other guy who replied - Midland M - is in the trade - so would know a lot more about these things then I do.

The PD version definitely best avoided though.

One thing worth noting on the 1.9 tdi - there was a version with the code BXE - and some 1.9 tdis with this code - BXE - have had issues with engines going bang (conrod going through the block).

Not sure how widespread the issue is - but if its not a BXE version - the 1.9 tdi is a good engine reliability wise imo.

The 2.0 litre 110bhp is a common rail unit and doesn't suffer from the same issues as the older 2.0 litre PD unit. Both 1.9 TDi and 2.0 TDi (110bhp) are 5 speed. The 2.0 CR TDi 110bhp is a detuned version of the 140bhp engine and replaced the 1.9 TDi as a stop gap until the 1.6 TDi was introduced in 2010.

OP, you say they are Highline models but are they Irish spec Highline or UK spec Highline models? UK Highline is actually lower spec than the Irish equivalent including having cheap looking aftermarket leather seats, manual air conditioning too.

    1.9TDI = Bulletproof

is it not unusual for them to be 5 speed when the petrol version is 6 speed? I know 1 of them is definitely irish, the other i am going to see for the first time tomorrow - the speedometer is in miles so i imagine english spec - i am not allowed to post link but car is the passat on highland motors website, the renault/citroen/honda garage in letterkenny

The 1.9 TDi (105bhp) was always 5 speed and the 2.0 TDi (110bhp) was a stop gap until it was replaced with the 1.6 TDi which was also 5 speed until recently.

If the one in Letterkenny is the black one then yes it's a UK spec Highline with the cheap looking leather seats. Irish Highline is much higher spec with proper full leather sports seats, etc.

yea thats it. so although its not as high a spec, is it still a good car? like is it worth it?

It's very low mileage for a 5 year old diesel especially a UK import so make sure that it has a verifiable service history.

I wouldn't rule out the 1.9 TDi either though if it's a proper Highline. It's a reliable engine if old and unrefined.

Apparently early CR units did still suffer from the same balance shaft issues as the older PD unit, not sure if it was on the same scale though.

I vaguely remember hearing this been alluded to on Briskoda (Skoda forum in the Uk) some time ago.

Id imagine wed be hearing a LOT more about it if it was on the same scale as the PD though.

Especially with early ones getting to 5/6 years old at this stage - I should think there must be a fair few of them now with a bit of mileage on the clock
