Laws on displaying license plates?

Sorry if a thread has been created on this before, I searched but couldn't find a similar one.

Basically, I have seen quite a few cars driving around with no number plates displayed on the front of the vehicle but still have them on the back. Then there are a few others who stick the number plate inside the vehicle on the windscreen.

Is this legal in Ireland? If not, is there a fine/some form of punishment for it?

Plates have to be displayed both front and rear. I know in the UK the legislation states that it must be in front of the axle for the front plate and vice versa for the rear.

If it has a plate in a window and no other plates it might be somebody taking the car for a test drive from a car dealership

On the front windscreen once it is affixed and visible from the front of the vehicle satisfies all the requirements of the applicable SI.

More likely someone in the motor trade abusing trade plates by using the car for private purposes.

more likely someone avoiding photos, if you get my drift :;)
nowhere in law does it state it has to be fixed to the bumper.

So once you have a plate displayed on the windscreen it is perfectly legal?

    Has to be "permanently affixed"
