Low tax private vehicle 7-8 seater?

Our family is expanding and so we are looking at buying a second hand vehicle that would ideally have seats for 7-8 with good leg-room and good boot space.

We had been looking at vw caravelles as a possibility or a crew cab type vehicle, either way something with sliding doors and van type practical boot size. However we were horrified to discover the horrendous tax on these. Crewcabs, if not officially crewcabs are taxed at the private rate and minibus type caravelles, if not public service vehicles are taxed as private vehicles and around €1000/yr.

I'm not gone on the idea of people carriers like the zafira because the rear seats eat up boot space and also don't seem that safe. Plus, we would be occasionally transporting our elderly parents around so that's why we'd need good leg room on all seats.

Is there a low tax option for exactly what I'm looking for (bolded above) does anyone know - I'm not savvy on many vehicle types so any advice would be much appreciated.

What you're looking for is pretty much the holy grail when it comes to cars and probably no vehicle exists that will tick all your boxes.

I wouldn't be worried about the safety of people carriers. They are easily as safe if not safer than van derived vehicles like the caravelle.

Maybe something like this?

Yes very challenging, but something like that would be ideal, thanks for link. And I just spotted vw shuttles which have a 1.9 litre engine so tax would high but not obscene.

Ford Galaxy, VW Sharan and Seat Alhambra are all full size 7 seater MPVs and come with the VAG 1.9 TDi engine. If you need something with more seats or space then you are going to the looking at van derived minibuses like the VW Shuttle or Ford Transit Tourneo.
