Looking at spending between 8 or 9k on a car in the next month. I am really open to ideas on what to get. Open to petrol or diesel. Have looked at 1 series, 3 series, Civics, S40s, a4s etc.

Any suggestions for that kind of money lads?

Civic, then 1 series for a difference to the pack.

OP you need to give a bit more specific information as €9k would buy a large variety of cars. Are you open to a coupe, hatchback/saloon or estate. Petrol v diesel will depend on your driving style as well as your annual mileage, ie if doing a lot of short journeys then stick to petrol.

Sorry lads I wasn't sure what to say. I would be open to a hatchback, saloon or coupe. Not so much an estate. I'm a twentysomething male teacher that drives about 30km a day, sometimes more. Wouldn't rack up serious milage but it'd very consistent for five days a week and then a bit more some weekends. Don't think I'd need a diesel but am definitely not against it either. Currently have a Hyundai Getz but would be looking for something a nice bit bigger, in engine size and also physical size really. Hope that helps clear up the situation. Thanks.

Do you have a limitation on what you want to spend on motor tax/fuel costs?

I wouldn't want to go over a 2 litre engine I suppose. At the minute I'm probably filling the tank once every two weeks I guess? Maybe more often. Being honest I'm not good to take note of consumption. I guess I don't wan't a gas guzzler but I want a car with a bit of pep all the same.

I really am open to any suggestions though. Randomly came across some lovely Alfa 159s today. Am I mad for looking at them??

I drive a BMW 118i (whenever I can pry the keys out of my mother's hands). It's nice, very nippy and has a decent bit of power in it. However, if you're an average sized guy I'd rule it out. It's sized completely for women. I've seen both my dad and my brother try driving it and it drives them mad. The footwell is sized I would say for size 4-7 feet and they practically trip over their own feet trying to drive it. If you're smallish it's very nice, though.

Yeah I like the 1 series alright but always felt they were more of a girly car. I'd get away with it sizewise but would nearly go 3 series as the price doesn't appear to differ too much between them.

Two lovely cars there but I noticed they are both automatic which I wouldn't like. That red car was a beauty! Give me that in manual with decent milage and you have yourself a deal! haha!

The Honda Accord is within your price range too:

You could also look at a Golf GTI.

Be careful though as many bad examples exist out there. Bring a VW mechanic along with you.

Links? I'd love something out of the ordinary. The Alfa 159 is a lovely car for the money if I could get a nice one I think. Never thought I was in the bracket for an accord to be honest!

The 5 pot diesel in the Alfa's is very highly regarded around here.

The problem with trying to buy a petrol Alfa 159 here is that most petrol engines in them are poor, the majority of them being the GM supplied 1.8 litre unit.

Audi are a bit meh imo, unless you are talking about one of the S models. Most are overpriced for what they are, underspeced and every tom dick or harry seems to be driving one especially felt spec A4s.

If you want something a bit on the quirky side then maybe look at the Subaru Legacy. Quirky enough to be different but still a practical daily driver.
