Proposal for a Spam Megathread

    Hi,

I frequent this forum a lot but recently there have been a lot of threads entitled "Spam from <insert company>" which fills up the forum a bit. While the intentions of the posters of these threads is honourable, to inform the general populace, the sad(or not) fact is the general populace don't frequent this forum, and hopefully the people who do would be wise to most spam and phishing emails they receive.

Can I propose we instead create a Spam megathread for posting these messages in?

Maybe Im in the enviable position that spam is no longer a problem I deal with. Occasionally I get an email into my inbox which is suspect and dares me to click on a URL for scantily clad women, or a free iPhone, but I mark those as spam and they disappear. The small number of times I got an email from my actual bank, I quickly check the headers, and determine wether its legit or not. I would think most regular users of this thread does the same. So I wonder about the usefulness of these threads.

I'd be curious of others opinions....

    yup,

And then random people that drop by could follow and it'll grow and all will know.

I'd second that. There's blatantly opportunistic attempts at spamming which you hope nobody would fall for, but there's also the more complex Bank/Apple/FedEx mails which are becoming increasingly difficult to spot for those who wouldn't be familiar with headers or URL's.

Sounds like a plan that would keep things tidy.

Perhaps its a sign of the times that the popularity of the forum appears to be growing (as measured anecdotially by my perception of activity on the forum -- which admitedly :o is not a scientific measure!) but assuming it is growing it will involve a mix of interested people - the one post wonders, the curious lurkers, the reasonably knowledgeable of IT in the generality of things, the black/white hackers (if you'll pardon the use of such terms), the hardcore and the professionals.

So striking a happy medium in that will become a challenge whilst keeping the place alive as a vibrant community of sorts. Spam thread after spam thread will drive the seasoned professionals bonkers and they ultimately will lose interest -- that is, if in their view of the world the signal to noise ratio gets inverted.

But i'd support a light touch approach - have the mega thread as the established place for such stuff, and if a noob/non indoctrinated posts outside of that thread, you can report it and a/the mod(s) can just merge it in. No need for hammering anyone that makes a mistake. That's one thing I like about this particular forum - it's genuinely welcoming. If you post something dumbass or noob-like (so long as you are being a genuine dumbass or a genuine noob) and the only thing that'll happen is you'll learn something at the end of it -- and maybe end up blushing a little :o

So TLDR, yes it's probably a good idea from the overall perspective of the community (of sorts) which interacts here.
