What are my options if I have to move abroad for a few years

As the title says I might be heading away for a few years so what are my option for the farm?

About 10 years ago my folks took the early retirement from farming, they were farming full time but also looking after a couple of their elderly relative as well which almost a time time job in its self. Anyway I leased the farm from them and have been doing that part time since.

Dad was working part time after he retired and kept an eye in things here while I was in work. He is fully retired now and an OAP now at home full time.

Anyway an opportunity has come up for me at work but will involve me having to move abroad for a couple of years. I can't farm it but don't want to just selling the cattle and have someone else come in either after building up everything over that last few years.

Would it be possible to set up a partnership with my dad so that he could manage the place while I'm gone with out effecting things like herd numbers and SPF?

Don't know the in's and outs of it - but be careful if he has already been paid as part of the farm retirement scheme

Yeah that's what I'm worried about. If it was a bigger farm or if I was doing dairy I could probably hire in a manager to run it while I was away but as it's a dry stock and suckler enterprise it's not going to be able to support someone full time.

Have you any siblings that can take over?

Don't make any drastic long term moves, rent for a year at first perhaps? Allot of people move and hate it, others love it. Best of luck whatever you do.

Not really, younger sister used to help out while was at work when she was around but is working up the country now and the rest live abroad.

A good Ag advisor should set you straight on your options :) but a good one is hard to find from what I have seen.

Just thinking would there be an opportunity for a company/person to act as a farm manager for a number of small holdings.

With the changes in farming and the large number of part time and small farmers would it be an opportunity for someone to manage full time a couple of these at the one time on behalf of people?
