    Hi all,

We recently bought our home and are considering if it is worth while converting the attic.

Is there anyway of knowing how much space is liveable etc

Also I would like to see an attic done but don't know anyone. Would it be rude just to knock on someone's door and ask to look ?

    Any advice would be great

    Cheers

It can definitely be worthwhile converting the attic, but it depends on a lot of factors:

    - Your budget
    - How much space is available in the attic
    - How much space is available on the floor below for a new staircase going into the attic
    - Will it be for use as a bedroom, as this affects design with regards fire safety regulations
    - Structural condition and layout of the roof timbers for how best to maintain the structural integrity of the roof construction while giving the most space

To be honest, unless it's a house very similar to your own, viewing another person's converted attic won't be much help as seemingly small differences can have huge impact on the design or suitability for conversion. Your best bet is to engage a professional (architect/surveyor/arch-tech/engineer) to take a look at it for you.

The houses would be very similar in fairness. We would ideally like to turn it in to a bathroom as the house has no bathroom upstairs or turn one of the rooms in to a bathroom if needs be.

Depending on the layout etc, you could possibly turn one of the bedrooms into a bathroom and use some of the leftover space (as the bathroom wouldn't need to be as big as the bedroom) for a new staircase into a new bedroom in the attic. Again though, there are a lot of variables, including budget, design and structure.

Been awhile since i've been on. Still haven't done anything with the attic as of yet but we went to a open viwing of a house that was for sale in our area and it's worth converting.
